Yeah, we know him. That's forum member loud160 on this site (but mostly active elsewhere). He has also helped test pcmhammer and done some development on another popular interface and software product. Not sure if he wants to be the face of that but those guys can speak up if they want to. The hardware is reasonably straight forward, the time is in the data protocol decoding and translation mostly and somewhat in the firmware development.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

There's an OEM part that does that. Don't remember what vehicle. At the time, there was 1 on eBay for like $200.
Was a little ambiguous looking plastic box with few pins.
I'll update this comment if I find it again.

I think its the PIM module you're thinking of

According to chemistry, alcohol is a solution...

That might be it.
Not seeing a US equivalent. Maybe it was AUS specific. I'm fairly certain it was early CAN vehicles, like 2008-2010 or so. Don't even remember if I seen it in a random wiring diagram, this forum, same subject in another forum.
EDIT: PIM does UART to VPW. There are $5 CAN modules for Arduinos though.

Yes, Pete does the hardware for VPW to CANbus. Would have to send him a message to see if he has a DIY solution: https://shop.swap-smart.com/pages/contact

There are also PIMs for UART to CAN (At least for the Holdens).

i worked out what i needed to turn on in the later e38's to get the ecu to turn on the ac control from the pim. ac control between bcm & ecu is handled via the pim, same for reverse light relay. i should probably put something up on my webpage 1 day before i forget what i did. well i already have but i just look at my tune file to see the difference. lol

Link?
Something worth being able to share when people have question elsewhere. And eventually I want to mess with later ECUs, most likely the E67.

So that was factory HVAC buttons in a swapped car that already used UART?
The point was make it work without customizing dash panels?
