Re: Turbocharging the ecotec motor
Probably age, abuse and neglect. Ls’s are newer and I’m sure a lot of young fellas found their way into a v6 before a v8. The ls’s 60’s are also slightly stronger. But as you know heat is the number 1 killer. I think you pointed out, the early commodores had smaller trans lines which they fixed later on. Same as corvette servo’s becoming standard on ls1 vx onwards. I think in the USA, any gm that was intended for towing or performance generally got a better box. But as you know we had half the budget over here
. Even just using the wrong fluid or slightly over filling them can lead to slip and burnt out clutches. Or just towing or giving it a hard time and over heating them. And once that fluid looks or smells burnt. Well you know the rest.

It also seems to be pretty common among the v6 community to fit shift kits thinking that’ll fix there slipping issues
. Plus most will go for the harsher settings when fitting a shift kit. Not really a good idea.

Can't argue Holden went cheap
I was watching a video just the other day of a L26 been stripped and it had exhaust manifold gaskets fitted, Holden didn't even bother with those!
My mate just got a bone stock VR which appears to be very tidy and in very good condition all round including the transmission. We will be putting 11P into that shortly and giving it a few little tweaks until it gets a Turbo kit fitted. I know the owner typically fits the Transgo stage 2 shift kits but we will see what we can do with the stock tranny and what we can achieve without opening it first. People like yourself have furthered our knowledge on how to tune these things into a reasonable transmission.
One table I really like in the Enhanced tunes is Power Enrichment PSI Offset Vs RPM which means you can keep the main line pressure table more stock-ish for normal driving/manners but then under boost you can add extra line pressure down low which you really need with the likes L67 that makes a lot more boost than stock.

Mate I’ve learned a ton from you over the years. Thanks for all your time and helpimmortality wrote: ↑Fri May 09, 2025 8:20 am Can't argue Holden went cheap

There was no 'they' in pulling apart the old trans.immortality wrote: ↑Wed May 07, 2025 10:34 pm How come a stock 4L60e dies behind a V6 and yet they live behind LS motors?
There is currently a class action lawsuit against Holden/GM about failing late model transmissions in Commodores, slipping/failing converters. OEM they are tuned to constantly slip the TCC! Anyway I was doing some reading about it and then saw something that says GM/Holden were doing the same with the 4L60e. So in stock form a lot of it has to do with the factory tuning of these transmissions.
The problem now is we are dealing with old transmissions and you just don't know what kind of condition it is in.
My mate is currently putting a new built 355 in his VR SS, when they pulled out the old 355/tranny it was shocking to see the state of the inside of the box and yet it was only slipping in 3rd at full power on the drag strip but was perfectly happy towing a trailer with Subaru on it for 400km+.
Yeah, the pan had like a silver toothpaste in the bottom. Drove around fine, except WOT 2-3 at high 5's/ low 6's rpm.

Mines been running a GTX3584RS for almost a year at 10-12psi good fuel system and good fuel it honestly seems unfazed I've drag raced it on slicks and even the Auto doesn't seem to care about the power it shifts quickly doesn't slip and has between 400,000ks to 500,000 ks on engine and trans.
Trans has a Corvette servo and synthetic fluid and I've spent more time tuning the trans then engine, it's a no trainer you should absolutely do it.

What RPM are you revving it to? Shifting at?Muncie wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 1:53 pm Mines been running a GTX3584RS for almost a year at 10-12psi good fuel system and good fuel it honestly seems unfazed I've drag raced it on slicks and even the Auto doesn't seem to care about the power it shifts quickly doesn't slip and has between 400,000ks to 500,000 ks on engine and trans.

Re: Turbocharging the ecotec motor
I've been spinning it to 6200-6400rpm shift maps to suit and pressures up in trans.
It's gone 14.1@101mph with wheelspin been limiting factor needs less boost off line as soon as turbo spools up at about 2300rpm it breaks loose.
