The1's Daily
Re: The1's Daily
5w50 mobil1, though i used to use 15w50 M1 but have been seeing how it runs and have just done an oil test which i will send away tommorrow to see how it compairs. I installed the pressure guage after so not sure what pressure i had with 15w50

Re: The1's Daily
mmm that might be the problem there.
mobil1 went down the toilet quite some years ago. UAO shows its actually just another API compliant "green" oil and actually less of the critical additive than most cheap brands.
I would try at least something like penrite high end synthetic oil or Joe gibbs or bradpenn if you can source them.
I would also go for 10w40 5w30 should still be ok though providing the oil is up to spec for yee ol pushrod engine.
what pressure are you aiming for?

Re: The1's Daily
Penrite? They can't even specify HTHS in there datasheets. Nor tell you when you ask them.
If anything id prob switch to Delvac if it were more available.
Wasn't really aiming for anything other than to be in range, but being slightly over is better than under so im not really worried about it.
Ive tested 0-40, 5-50, 15-50 M1 and run 2 drops between oil samples, so far 5-50 108/17.5Cst has run the best with zero noise even -8c in winter cold start, just waiting to see the results for wear vs the others.
My UOA's so far have shown next to no wear with 5k changes only 0-40 had bad wear.
M1 is also different in AU to US

Re: The1's Daily
you are probably right, most figures of UOA that I get a look in are from the US. I know a guy who had to develop his own oil as nothing there was up to spec except for Joe gibbs, he actually worked with them to make this new oils for the engines he develops. I mean there were oils few year back and well before that, that were adequate but all turned to shit last 2-3 years.The1 wrote:Penrite? They can't even specify HTHS in there datasheets. So what are the specs of the oil pressure in the ecotec?
I never really looked into the shear numbers of penrite oil, i use penrite thought my car and the difference its made over other oils I have used in the past are quite significant in just how long everything is lasting and noise levels. wort oil of a major brand name I have use was castrol, and that was the 10w40 magnatec crap. noisy as hell on start up and damaged the engine pretty quick. Had a friend who put in in his hyundai and it seized all the lifters lol.

Re: The1's Daily
Well after a good drive to work it seems to have settled down, 55-60 idle and 60-70 elsewhere, see how it goes on the way home.
Yeh i can't remember exactly, it's been discussed on boboilguy forums about the differences between US/AU with M1, might have been the Zinc they were playing with.
Not sure if it's still true or not but a few years ago i had an oil guy tell me mobil refined most of the worlds base oil stock, so when you buy another brand your buying Mobil oil with there additives.
Personally id still trust M1 being a company with $B R&D and a big history over a little Aussie oil shop, not that i like to knock anything Aussie.
Though at the end of the day find something that works well with your engine and do an oil test, if your happy with the wear rate for your change intervals you will be fine. 15w/50 M1 for 300,000K and mine still was golden on the metal as you can see in the photos and can't point to any problems anywhere atm.
Page 5/6 was the info i found about oil pressure.

https://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopi ... =40#p28384
Also mustn't be to bad BMW and Merc in AU are still using 0W-40 Mobil1 with 35,000KM changes.

Re: The1's Daily
funny that I just discovered that site like 30min ago, was just reading whole bunch of stuff on there.
also found that penrite HPR 5 has 3.9 HTHS. No other info that I could find. just from someone who knew what the specs were on that oil
Just checked few other well know good oils, none of them specified the HTHS either?
Was going though the Joe Gibs AU website and noticed the oil the guy I was talking about developed in stock.
DT-40 and DT-50 aircooled engine oil.

Re: The1's Daily
here's an old thread with a oil sample from mine when i was still on 15/50 M1, mate posted the results as he lives on those forums and is an oil guy past. I will repost them anyway when i get the results back showing 0/40 15/50 5/50 and how they compair.

Yeh doesn't suprise me Penrite would be below 4
HTHS is a High Temperature High Shear viscosity rating and they run it through several bearing sheer tests to get a rating, i think it's run @ 150c, basicly to simulate conditions inside an engine with bearings under load.
Alot of oil companies are lowering it for Fuel economy and lower Green House Gas Emission ratings at the expense of your engine wear, which is why most dont advertise it in there datasheets. Though if Mobil1 stopped showing it they'd loose alot of big business and im sure if the rating was false someone else is out there testing it to say so. Also a Rating over 2.9 is 40 or higher and not categorized so the company could label a 3.0 as 60 which is why you never go by the label ratings.
I had a look on that Joe Gibs website but the datasheet's aren't working for me, went back to the Main US site but nothing listed for HTHS either and one thing that stood out when i check the 15/50 oil is flashpoint is 149c
Not much margin for error there! M1 is 230c.

Re: The1's Daily
thats odd? 149ºc flash point? is that even possible?
So is there a difference in the US mobil oil and ours? like actual proof of it?
I can't find any data sheets for the mobil oil, do you have a link?
EDIT: I found it, but there is not statement of the ZDDP or P levels

Re: The1's Daily
Google Mobil1 5/50 with rating and you generally get it first or second link.
5/50

15/50
http://www.mobil.com/Australia-English/ ... 5W-50.aspx
yeh it is rather odd, thought i might be a mistaken but checked another datasheet and was much the same temperature. Which begs to mention why they dont list HTHS which is run @ 150c there oil would dry up lol
I hadn't seen any problems with my UOA's, pretty sure it was Zinc they reduced, as it's one of the additives to help minimize wear. But for life of me can't find any of the threads on BITOG
