Re: Bedford CF Van
whilst on the subject of the conversion i've been thinking for a while what would be the best solution to the known issues of the 304's ignition modules that seem to fail regularly and cost alot to replace.... i came up with using the same thing i've done to delcoerise my 202 dizzys, so i started with a 253/308 electronic dizzy which i happned to get donated free off my mate, and i then proceeded to lock the advance and remove all the un-needed bits to make it suitable.
mechanical advance locked vacuum advance locked camira ignition module fitted comparison between the two installed like factory all that's left to do now is re-route some wiring and splice in the right plugs for the camira module and shes good to go.

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: Bedford CF Van
I wouldn't mind doing that if mine failed. thought about it but in the commodores there isn't enough space to have the ignition module mounted on the dizzy like that to close to the fire wall and manifold should be pretty good in your old girl and easy to get if it did stuff up

Re: Bedford CF Van
yeah I did wonder about that ...another thing you could do, rather than mounting the module like I have you can remotely mount it, but you'll need a heat sink on it, or if you wanted to, chop the flat part off where I have mine mounted, then mount it to a bit of 90 degree alloy or something similar, and then screw it to the same point, imagine my dizzy but with the module facing up and down close to the dizzy ....
actually thinking about it more, you could mount the camira module where the original goes in the commodore and then just fit a heat sink etc, and then you'd be able to pick up all the wires you needed from that point and you'd only need 4 wires going to the dizzy for the reluctor and the coil.
and yeah will be good with the Bedford being able to remove the engine cover to easily get at the dizzy on a 304!! that is one of my pet hates of 304's in commodores!

You could also run an MSD dissy now for ultimate bragging rights.

Re: Bedford CF Van
i had thought about using a dizzyless setup but happy with dizzy for what this motor will be doing, just going to be a tow car work horse, no need for MSD, and from my experience with them on speedway motors i wouldn't brag about having one they seem to fail very regularly!
plus this setup is going to only cost me for the correct rotor button otherwise free

Nice conversion. I also like the conversion just to the left of the distributor.

Re: Bedford CF Van
hahaha yeah had to block off a few air leaks when i got this engine running on the test stand!
just a bit of an update for anyone wanting to do this, the rotor button you need is
Bosch GB786
or
FuelMiser BH101
its from 1982-83 XD Falcon V8 (and others).
with this you can then use the original 304 cap and leads if you wish or there is a cap you can get with the male plugs for the leads but i don't know what this is.... i am using the original 304 cap and leads.

Re: Bedford CF Van
well aside from tidying up some wiring the camira module on 304 is a goer

the camera angle is a bit shit, you can't see the spark at the start but you can hear it zapping away, and the spark becomes noticeable as it gets faster!
so after removing the normal ignition module wiring from the loom I was left with the 2 coil wires and the 4 delco feed wires and it was the perfect length to re-route them back to the dizzy area.
as you can see I have used some temporary coil mounting and wiring as im not sure where that's going to be mounted till its in the Bedford.
as my good mate Borat says "High five, Great success!!" heheheh
