Thermostats

Post by HQ355 »

At the moment the 355 in the HQ is running the standard thermostat, was thinking of putting in a cooler one to try and kept the inlet manifold from getting as hot as it does and at the same time putting twin thermo's on to free up a couple of extra kw's. Does any one have recommendations of good brands and what temp ranges to run ? If there's no real gain I won't bother as it never over heats and sits on 92 all day everyday wether it's on the dyno or traffic or highway

No experience with the thermostats but had a bit to do with thermos.
How's the radiator for size compared to a commodore one?

Bigger than commo one when I compared it to an old VR V8 one a few years ago, I was just wondering what to set the on off temps at as i'l prob still put the twin thermos on anyway (vx commo twins)

I would be very interested to see if you get any extra power with a cooler thermostat. I would think the heat picked up by the air flowing over the hot areas in the manifold would be minimal buts lets see.

I think your probably right Charles it's just that Vlad and myself have seen very high inlet temps on this when we've been logging (over 100) so I thought if I could do anything to lower it then that's got to be a good thing ! I'm not expecting much but I thought that with the thermo fan conversion I'd pick up a free 5kw or so and gain some economy ?

On the commodores I've ran the ford mondeo thermo's with factory shroud. Shrouding them is a MUST.
The EL falcon and the AU falcon fans are slightly bigger so could be good for you. All are twin fans with a moulded shroud.

As for switching temps in 12P i set them to in at 96 then they turn off at 91 works a treat.

Ok thanks for that, I've just been measuring the VX ones and they should fit a treat ! Minimal cutting and fabrication and all the shrouding will be untouched :) looks like I may have a bit of wiring to do between Xmas and New Years

With the on and off temps make sure the off temp is higher than the thermostat temp or they won't switch off.
Ie if you have a 92 degree thermostat, and at the on temp at 93 and off temp at 88, they will switch on once it reaches 93 but never switch off. The thermostat will close at 92 and temp won't get any lower.

Obviously there's some margin, the thermostat won't be completely closed at 92. It may have to get down to 88 before it closes completely. Just make sure the off temp is no lower than thermostat temp and you won't have a problem.

On at 97 works good for me but trial and error will get it right

100 deg ouch that's very high. Have you got a cold air intake?
