Does anyone have any experience with the chinese VFD devices on ebay, used to run a 3 phase engine off single phase supply?

I have this engine (2.2kw, 3 phase 415v):

I think it will work, but with no experience and only whats in the add to go by I would like confirmation if this device would work, if it needs anything else (idler engine? - dont think so, not sure), and if once set up I could have a switch which turns it on and then if the hoist engine will operate normally until I turn the VFD off. I dont want to have to navigate menus and involve extra steps everytime I want to engage the 3 phase engine. I'd also like to know what the brake resistor is.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has experience or knowledge of these devices. It seems from the spec that the output of 415v might be a problem from 240v source.

Should do what you want. The pot will also allow you to tune the speed of the motor within reasonable limits. The brake resistor is to dissipate energy when using dynamic braking, which should not be an issue for you.

You will only get 3 phase 240V out of that inverter - possibly a little higher, as it rectify's the incoming supply then PWM approximates 3 phase sine waves.
From the name plate on the motor, it is 415v star connected. You may be able to delta connect the windings of the motor inside the terminal box to effectively make it a 240V 3 phase motor.

If you can post a picture of the terminals, I can probably help more.

If you do get one make sure you over spec the KW rating of the VFD a bit.

I use one on my 3ph mill. Works well but as VL400 said, I'd def over spec the VFD a bit. The pot can be used as a speed controller but also affects the torque, mine has the ability for tacho display but never used it.

It was a chinese one off ebay, been going well for 6yrs or so.

My question is how much power will the motor loose by running it on 3 phase 240 volts and will it be a problem?

Im not too sure how the delta conversion would work with this engine. I havnt been able to find any good info about wye to delta modification with a VFD. I did find this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSxaU162FRc which talks of running the engine with no VFD using a cap. The equation it shows is 70 x power in kw=capacitance in uF so 70*2.2=154, so possibly good for two 80uF motor run caps in parallel which arnt too expensive. BUT it also shows how to rewire the connectors, and it involves disconnecting the common side and connecting the pins across from the input side instead. In the case of my engine 2 of the common pins dont exist, so I assume the common wiring is internal to the engine and going to be harder to do.

Instead of having a second row of terminals and using bridging bars, They've connected the windings with the supply wires. Still all there.

Hmm ive been looking at this for quite some time and I have to conclude that it is hard wired for Y configuration. The diagram in the lid shows the end of all 3 coils coming out as 'N' which is the grey wire that goes to a single post in the pic (The N isnt clear from the angle of the shot). Also at the top you can see 4 wires coming out of the engine and on to the terminal block - U1 (Red), V1 (Brown), W1 (Yellow), and N(Grey). From this I have to conclude that unless I open the engine up and rewire the other end of 'N' I cant swap this engine to delta configuration. Am I missing something?
