Tech 1 cable pinouts

Post by MAGP »

I have sat down with my Tech 1 and made a table of various pin outs that hopefully will be able to help others in the future if they need to make a cable for their Tech 1. I would appreciate it if those who have a Tech 1 would check the file and see if it matches up with their unit that they know works (meaning you have actually used it) on the cars in question. The file is attached to this post and if anyone has anything to add to it I'll adjust it and give credit where it is due. There are some in the VR-VS cable I am unable to work out so I am hoping others will be able to fill in the blanks. As this is a forum with people from all over the world I'd encourage users from the US, Europe, Japan, and other places to help if they can.

N.B. No warranty is provided, given, or implied. If you make a cable up from this guide you take all responsibility.

Thanks The1. Is that VT tail light connector in the 1st pic?

There are differences between the Tech 1 and Tech 1A. The Tech 1 has a 2 row dsub and the Tech 1A has the 3 row dsub. I have also found that the 12-16 pin adaptor I purchased from the US works on US vehicles (LT1 and younger) but not Australian vehicles so I am trying to get the last one for the 8192 Baud (CEL) wire for the 2 row dsub. Once that mystery is solved I'll be able to finish my cable and I'll update the file for anyone else who is looking for the information. I'll also add the 3 row dsub to the file for those who have a Tech 1A but no cable.

Well going over your pics with both the VN and VR type connectors it appears as though the 160 and 8192 baud rate data are located on teh same pin in the dsub so that means in teh 2 row dsub the correct pin is pin 9. Your a legend The1 Thanks for your help.

EDIT: I'll update the file in the OP.

That makes sense. The same pin is used on the computer for both speeds and which type is active depends on the OS and the presence of the SXR chip. The 160 baud is just bit banged from the main cpu when the sxr is not provided and the right OS is used.

I wasn't sure about it. I thought it could be possible but I didn't want to use the wrong pin and, possible, destroy a mint Tech 1 so I did the checking on my own Tech 1 and cable and couldn't get a reading.

Yep. That adapter has me a bit stumped at the moment. The wire that is switched goes to the power wire on the aldl connector but it goes to a different pin in the dsub. It's an on/off switch for something in the Gen2 LT1 from what I can figure out. US vehicles need a different base cable that has a cigarette lighter plug to power the Tech 1 so the wire we have in our cars for power supply is free in the aldl connector fitted to US vehicles to be used for other things.

If I could get hold of the manuals for each available cartridge I'd sit down and figure that one out.
