Re: Good anti virus software?
I do have the shields off most of the time. I never really had many real hits in my entire pc life. Had probably a dozen false positives in all my life and the odd inactive trojan sitting in 20 year old keygens etc.
I don't get virus etc, its just more of a precaution.
I have had a few unsuspected ordinary sites infected with malware blocked though by the browser scanner. I guess thats actually where these have come most in handy for. I never had a performance issue with it either, just in recent few months from a certain built it went to shit and is slow as fuck. That was also the case with AVG and I am pretty sure the same reason I ditched avast as well. They never seem to have stability with their built releases. works for X number of builds and then they fuck it up for a number of years and finally fix it etc..
What about kaspersky? This is a paid one I know but how does it fair compared to the other paid ones out there? Being Russian made I would imagine it to be on top of it given they are top dog when it comes to hacking, security breaching and virus creations etc...

i follow Malware Hunter Team on twitter, they use virustotal.com for testing virus's against virus scanners, the windows defender picks up alot of them.
Re: Good anti virus software?
I tend to think most AV solutions are more of a hindrance than a help. I have found on Windows if you practise "safe hex" you don't need anything more than Windows Defender. If push comes to shove I install AVG but I prefer to leave Windows Defender doing what it was designed to do. It's like VK_3800 says some people need saving from themselves, I don't think you're in that category though.
Apple products aren't free from virus/malware and neither is Android or its bigger brother Linux. There has been a huge increase in non MS platform virus malware in the last 12 months simply because of the growing popularity of the *nix type of OSs. Having said that I don't run an AV on Debian.
Setup a decent firewall in either Linux (do a homebrew in iptables) or BSD (PFsense has a huge number of plugins or OPNsense) and that will take care of alot of issues. Set up OpenDNS Home or OpenDNS Family Shield on a hardware firewall or your router and many websites that can cause issues are blocked. I use iptables and OpenDNS and haven't had an issue in years. I have been looking at this but I found out today that it isn't set up for caching and probably wont support it anyway so it's no good to me.

Agree, dont trust dodgy software. If you absolutely must run something dubious run it in a VM where you can snapshot the vm, run the tool, capture the output and then revert to the previous snapshot. Any hidden system changes to the VM will be reverted. Windows sandbox tools are almost as good for the same purpose.

Here's a malware report that may interest some people. https://www.av-test.org/fileadmin/pdf/s ... 6-2017.pdf

Re: Good anti virus software?
It's been a few years since I touched on this... as they change day to day let alone year to year...
Whats the best value for money anti-virus/malware protection out there, I would ask if there's any freeware but I don't think there's such a thing these days especially without strings attached!

I still dont need find a need beyond the free and built in windows av, combined with common sense avoiding malware downloads. If something looks shady I dont run it, or run it in a VM which can be snapshotted, to roll back any changes that might have been made, or use the windows sandbox. But in general, there isnt much need to run anything that risky.

I'm still using Avira free edition, it's shite but better than nothing as I don't have the built in windows one. When I upgrade my PC at the end of the year (in hope that GPU prices finally come down after many years of price gouging) I will get either win 10 or 11 and use the free built in one.

Re: Good anti virus software?
I've just found now having been forced to got to win10 with most app's that the built in stops a lot of stuff that isn't even a risk & then deletes it automatically without me even being told unless I make sure I select ignore this hdd before I plug it in which is hard to do!
