VR AUTO TO 808 ECU

Post by delcowizzid »

well im just getting ready for what looks like a bit of a mission.Have a guy with a VR commodore auto thats had a VN-VP hydraulic auto installed and they have left the box wiring just hanging out not connected. He has error codes for solinoids and trans temp and TCC circuit as well rather than turn off the codes and continue running the auto ecu Im contimplating an ecu swap to the 808.the only things worring me are its ABS and thats connected to the serial bus but im presuming thats only for ABS error codes anyway.now it seems the auto ecu has the same 2 plug configuration on the ecu so should be just a simple repinning of the plugs and reattaching the the required auto trans wires to suit the vn auto.thanks too holden202 ive got the vr auto wiring diagrams and have labelled all the pinouts for it so far.there seem to be a lot of differences between it and the 808 in wire positions but im sure i can handle that.allso the DFI has the input for the cam angle sensor and an extra wire from the DFI to ecu for the same cam angle sensor im hoping the dfi will still work without that wire.now just to draw up a pinswap table and see how many really need moving.also looks like the vn and vs auto's use a different style VSS sensor so we may need to swap that too so so far we are looking at 1x 808 ecu 1x VSS and at worst a dfi but im sure that should be fine as is.

isn't abs part of the BCM ... in which case that should go on working without the pcm anyways ....

i don't see any issues with the DFI ... i'm using a VS DFI on the ecotec with a vn loom and ecm and it works fine, i haven't got the wire going to the cam sensor at all either.

VSS should work fine and i would leave it the same as if you change it that will screw with the speedo ... simply put the ppk number from the VR cal into the vn cal when you do the swap and it will be fine.... my Torana has the vn sensor without the divider circuit in the dash and it is happy with the ecm having a ppk value of about 7070 or something it is .... it roughly converts to the vn number if you divide it by 5 and take into account my change in diff and tyres!

go for a drive while data logging and you'll soon be able to sort the speedo if its not right...

so as i see it, 1 x 808, crapload of pins changed and then a change to the cal data and you should be on your way ;)

If it was my car id take the easy option and just disable the auto codes and sort the VSS signal out - the VR auto PCM looks for a reluctor style pickup and the VN-VP auto has a 12v square wave output.

Would be done in an hour :D

yeah it must have the VR VSS anyway as the speedo is working.the only real reason for the 808 swap was partly due to the new hot cam ,extractors and the big throttlebody etc going in shortly and the fact i wanted to realtime tune it with my 808.might just wire up the auto wires and cancel some codes this weekend and do a quick tune and when the cam arrives we might still contemplate an ecu swap.

well ive finished cross referencing wires have to move a fair few :D just the one that bothers me the electric climate control wire to the ecu and serial aldl data wire to ABS.definately not a half hour job to change all the pins round but give me half a day with no-one anoying me asking questions im sure i can get it done easy as think ill buy a repinning tool to speed up the process too.

Climate control, pin B12? Thats just the A/C request line, goes to pin B8 on an 808.

You do also know the VR auto plugs dont plug into a 808 without some mods yeah? The key ways are different.

nope didnt realise the plugs need some TLC :D but im sure i can fix that worst come to worst i do have a few sets of vn plugs here for conversions.I just had a thought even if I wire up the 4th gear trans temp switch and the TCC is the ecu even going to switch the TCC without the solinoids and range select switches connected to tell it what to do.

Buy ??? dirty word  didn't know you could, i make them out of grenade pins (from hydraulic timing belt tensioners) made of good hard steel that come up great with a bit of hammering/grinding, can make them any size for different plugs and stay good and strong
Build it, Race it, Break/Bend it ; Repeat.

yeah i actually just manufactured one myself just now :D im sure i could of got away with using a match stick  but i now have a nice metal one even my paper clip worked well during testing but my new creation is better.ECU and new VSS has been bought ready for the weekend total cost $100 pretty good.got most of the pinswap diagram done seems the VR diagram doesnt have a park neutral switch feed as it must be on the trans or something but thats easy to fix anyway.2 less grounds and one less power feed on the VR to buy the look of it so looks like the soldering iron might have to come out at some stage.will be installing on saterday morning hopefully tuned by late arvo.then its wait till the custom ground cam arrives and ill install that for him and tune it too suit.

well the day didnt go according to plan  seems whoever did the T700 conversion pulled the rear tranny housing and fitted the VR cog on the output shaft and the VR VSS in the housing so the ecu could see it.so the vn VSS dont fit as the VR cog has a straight cut gear to pulse the reluctor winding.so for now disabled codes fixed a major MAP sensor hose leak made it drive much nicer and helped the 20l/100km fuel consumption.as well as a fuel filter blew through the old one that was on wrong as wel and black fuel came out so she was pretty dirty in there.gave it a quick few tunes till we had some respectful power and left it at that for now still no TCC lockup but its not really a highway car anyway.next step is finding either a way to make the pulses from the reluctor into a nice squarewave for the 808 ecu or the other option i dont want to do is pull the housing and swap the cog for the VN VSS.so no testing of wideband yet :( but all in all productive day
