I am trying to get the two-speed fan function to work on a VS V8 manual running BMZL bin on a 16206305.

This car had an engine driven fan from factory. The low and high speed fan temperatures were set up around 110 degrees. The electric fan for the air con condenser would turn on at that temperature, even with the AC turned off. The car now has dual fans from an AU Falcon fitted.

I ran BMZL against 16183082 $12 vers 1 definition file in Tunerpro to set the temperatures down to 94 deg for low speed and 98 for high speed. One fan connected to the high speed circuit now comes on at 98 deg, but the the other fan doesn't come on at all.

16183082 $12 vers 1.xdf also shows an option setting to enable the two-speed fan function (Bit 2 at location 000A), but when I change this the Check Engine light is on and the engine hunts severely at idle, like it has gone into limp mode. Both fans are running all the time. I didn't check the fault code.

$12.xdf doesn't define the option at bit 2 of 000A.

Can anyone tell me what the option setting at this location actually does? Any clues on why the two-speed fan function won't work? Where can I find the best .xdf to use for BMZL?

according to the memcal details BMZL is $5A so your probably using the wrong xdf.

your probably better off converting to use $12P code, it will have the best xdf for anything you want to do.

i have twin thermos on my bedford (holden 5ltr with VR V8 Auto computer) and i set it to run them separately and found that the low speed fan ran for way way longer, VL400 suggested i run them at the same time but have the low speed and high speeds seperated by a few seconds (so less load on the alternator all in one hit) so keep that in mind, but i guess you need to get the two working independently first before you worry about that.

Agree, move across to BLCF in 12P if you can. Its the last V8 revision code, and gives you the extra features of 12P, and an accurate and complete ADX and XDF.

I'm confused. BLCF is a VR bin. How can this be the latest V8 revision if BMZL was a VS bin?

Is BLCF a 185 kW tune?

When you say "12P" is that the bin or the xdf?

What does "move across to 12P" mean?

You are right BLCF is a VR tune, but its the one that VL400 determined is the best and now I look more closely I can see that its the latest $12 operating system tune. It will run a VS, wont be a step backwards and will allow you to use the included definitions which you cant beat.

BMZL is a HSV tune but if you dont have XDFs that are good enough you might not be able to do what you want. If you want the 185kw mods, grab BFPM as its the $12 HSV tune and you will be able to compare with one of the later $12 tunes listed at https://pcmhacking.net/memcals.html and copy any tables or changes you want in to the $12P BLCF. Just make sure you dont confuse the XDFs. The $12 XDFs wont work for $12P and the $12P XDF wont work for the factory $12 files. You cant mix and match.

So, tell me if I am understanding correctly:

I should use the difference tool in Tunerpro to compare the $12 bin files BFPM and BLCF.

Any differences that I find should be modified in the $12P BLCF to match the $12 BFPM values.

However, from what I can see in the $12P definition it doesn't give me any options in regard to the two-speed fan function.

Am I missing the point?

Right, well, i did think 12P had the 2 fan functions in it, but I had never noticed that it does not as I have not used it on my cars. Ive just had a closer look and 12P has notes that low speed fan was removed, and to use flex lookup instead. So, that makes it a little more complicated but it can be done. You need to use the ose flashtool to modify the bin and configure a flex output. Say using CTS and Speed, and select the high and low values that want in a table. Then you choose the output type is digital (relay). Then you use it to modify the bin, and then use it to modify the xdf. Now you have a bin and xdf you can use together. If you want say the fan to be on above 80kph and stop at 100kph (due to enough external airflow), and on at 100degrees, edit the flex a table so that its at 100 in the area you want on, and 0 everywhere else. It wont have the hysteresis, but I dont imaging the signal would be so unstable that it would not work.

Note that I have not used this and I just threw together this example as a test so that I could describe it. You may want to use higher or lower range of values. And I would expect the flex out to switch ground side of a relay. But this should give you an idea what Im getting at. Note that I was using whole numbers, but what you see is rounded off due to 8 bit number precision and is normal and functional.

Thanks Antus.

I was looking at the OSE 12P ECU wiring earlier and noticed the four "flex outputs". That explains how to configure them. Very useful for fans and other applications.

This clever solution by VL400 allows you to get the fan hysteresis using a flex table.

That is very clever. It uses the output value of the table as one if the inputs. This is pretty much the same way an op-amp based analog comparator with hysteresis works. The output is used to modify one of the inputs.
