Just looks like a sticky carbon in the centre of the cap. Quiet a common thing to have happen. I wouldn't blame the MSD.

maybe the cap is not rated to the msd's spark ? i have seen them before do that, gets too hot and then falls apart

I reckon you are right. I will be keeping a closer eye on the replacement cap.

You need to make sure your got the right cap. The carbon button must be pushed against the rotor button and if not it will blast the carbon to oblivion quiet quickly. I would try and get an original Bosch. If it's the MSD well there's no easy fix that I know of but I have seen it with lots of cars in the past with std ignition systems. Seeing the old cap is stuffed cut the side out and fit it back on to see if the Bakelite almost makes contact with the rotor button to get an idea if it's the correct one.
