Well, I set the desired idle function I mentioned before (F13M) to std (687.50), burnt the chip and manged to go for a very quick drive, and it has certainly dropped the idle, but not by 250rpm. Must be something else that helps determine the idle, I did some searching and found a mention of a MAP setting ? Im guessing that the tune wants the idle speed to also have a specific vacuum ?
Theres also F10 and F14 which sound like they could have something to do with it..
Also is there a specific function that 'raises' the idle when it sees anything from the VSS ? And then a delay once the signal stops ? I cant seem to find that function.

Yes, there is quite a lot that affects it. There are temperature corrections, and there is the limitations to how much it'll adjust the spark to reduce power to let the revs fall, and there is limits to how much air the idle control solenoid can block, and all of these are modifiers on how fast it'll naturally idle with the fuel added as per the idle fuel table with the amount of air physically getting in. You need to get setup with the logging hardware and log it at idle.. see what the desired idle is, check if the IAC is at its limits, check the AFRs, and go from there.
Or work back the other way. If the idle is close to ok on a stock bin, use the compare functions of the new chip versus stock and decide what the path of least resistance is to getting the combo you want. Some of the changes from the new bin to the stock, and slight idle changes, or moving factory settings back in to the new bin, perhaps with just tiny adjustments.

wow, ok...and I guess they all dependent on each other somewhere down the line....
Is there any doco that I could read that may shed some light on which functions do what ?

have you read the basic tuning guide thats in my signature below ?
its based around $12P tuning but most of it is the same process for other tunes and it would be a good starting point.

Hi Guys,
Still not having much luck with the tuner.....But...
Ive got the serial board and nvram addon's from VL400 with the 12P tune. Plugged it on this arvo...and instantly the idle is fantastic and drove really well, just no extra power. Even lowered the idle to 675 (Live!!), adjusted the idle screw and is rock solid. Not all over the place like that other tune!
Ok...Now im going to try and take the good bits from the $5d tune and put them into $12p.
I started having a play this afternoon,
I copied over the following maps.
EST -20-100kpa Main Spark Advance vs MAP and RPM
VE - 20-100kpa Volumetric Efficiency (VE) as a function of MAP and RPM (had to create the 65,76,85 and 95 columns
A/F Ratio - 20-100kpa Air Fuel Ratio vs RPM and MAP (5D map had 12.00 at the 400rpm / 20 mark, but I changed it back to 14.70)
After the change I went for another drive...it goes a bit better but nothing like the $5d tune, and it almost stalls well pulling upto a stop sign etc .. are there any other 'usual suspects' that I should be checking ?
Ive included the bin file in the hope that some kind person might have a look over it for me
Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!

Ok....erm...well after some good advice from VL400, I decided to started from scratch again, and just copied the EST - 20-100kPa Main Spark Advance vs MAP and RPM and VE - 20-100kPa Volumetric Efficiency (VE) as a function of MAP and RPM tables.
Only issue I have now is that I seem to have broken the idle again...(atleast while cold anyway) Once the car starts and then comes down to idle, its all over the place...and even stalls sometimes..
Ive attached the updated bin and the log

Have a look at page 5 of Holden202's basic tuning guide.

Firstly, your idle spark advance needs to match your main spark advance.
You said that it idled well when you put the stock 12P bin onto the NVRAM?
if that is the case, I would suggest starting with the standard values in the 400 - 800 rpm rows of your tables.
You can copy the other rows from your $5D tune into the rest of the table, but try to keep the transition smooth.

i would just start with a fully stock 12p tune and tweak it yourself instead of useing anything out of the mailorder tune who did you get it from
