Righto, finally got to the bottom of things, so it seems. The other week I had several o-rings start to leak where the injectors go into the fuel rails. For the time being I have removed and plugged the supply and return hoses to the rails. Now, unexpectedly, on gas it idles better than it ever has! Must have had one or more injectors leaking a little when meant to be closed, letting fuel in because of residual pressure.

The other day I found that the water temp sensor wire (ECU, not gauge) had fallen off.
