I have a Mitsu EVO and I know in the states the fellas have written a nice piece of software to spit out a pass for all the emission test codes no matter what the outputs really are. It wont take long. Maybe someone like Tazzi is already working on it.
ahahahahaha. Thing like this already exist for the tradies with work cars. Best mates ute has a little OBD device that logs GPS, speed, rpm ect throughout the day to prove what the car is being used for. Only a matter of time before the insurance companies followed with their "Driver Buddy". Would be interested in how much you actually save on insurance? And how much data is actually logged/saved, and how it is transmitted?

It wont be too long before some TV show runs a segment on all these "regular people" who were $thousands out of pocket when they tried to make a claim and it was denied based on some minor offence whether it was technicality logged during the accident or not. "I am a good driver and it was the other uninsured, unregistered driver with a blood alcohol of .211 who ran me off the road and will never pay despite the fault, but the insurance company wont pay up on my comprehensive insurance because the device logged me at 26km/h in a 25km/h zone at night when there was clear viability and no workers around 3 weeks before the accident on the other side of the city! I saved $50 in premiums a year, but im now $60k out of pocket..... (or something like that...)

Then some people will wake up. Its just that we can see what's coming.

Ahhhh ... this thing (privacy protection) needs to be done in the PCM firmware, since that's what the insurance black box connects (talks) to. So we (hey, I'm OBD1, so I'm safe) need someone like VL400, The1 or Antus to save us! (If I've left someone out that hacks (can hack) firmware, my apologies.)

You send the black box what it wants to see, not what is really happening. So it would be an extra (hidden) module between the OBD port and the ECU, intercepting the reply from the PCM and modifying the data to appear like your driving a Prius to bingo.

Yeah, but that'd be too easy for them to detect.

But they would never know?

Just intercept the speed/rpm commands, and set max limits

Never goes over 60km/hr

Exactly that!!!

I can almost hear it now.. "I saved thousands by proving Im a safe driver!".
"I couldnt prove that I wasnt going 150km/hr in my last accident but this would have saved me!"

...And ill be sitting there thinking.. howd the f*** did you survive 150km/h crash

People will volunteer for it, like they give away their private details and consent to receiving spam at every turn just for the chance to enter a "free" prize draw. To be honest I don't really care if idiots get bitten by their own stupidity. I would object very strongly to anything compulsory.

Having said that the newest car I own is a VN Calais and even thats a bit too modern for me, will only be around until I'm ready to pull the drivetrain for another vehicle :-)

There is an insurance company here that's currently doing a big marketing push, they talk about asking you lots more questions to lower your premiums - basically what they do is heavily restrict your coverage by excluding things you say you don't do. Leave your car outside one night when your policy says its always garaged, its not covered under insurance (etc). I can see this kind of information gathering supporting silly ideas like this.
