Its closer to our peak period now with ~60 users on the site and cpu is hanging between 20 and 50%. Site record is more than 200 users so I'll need to keep an eye on that. Im not sure handling so many direct ssl connections is possible on the current hardware without slowdown at really busy times
Lets call this a trial period. I may need allow http clients again just for load but would leave https as an option.

On a small VPS slice with an optimised configuration. 1Gb ram, 10Gb disk. Nowhere to offload it too. Web and database on the host.
Theres are also other sites on it. Bellett.net gets busy. Another is not forums and is busy.
Maybe when the NBN rolls around i'll be able to get a phat link to home and host it on something gruntier with UPS, though power is pretty stable here (touch wood).

antus can you front end it with a LB which does SSL offload?

No physical access, its just a commercial vps slice.
Well that and the only LB tools and fat enough pipes at my disposal are my employers and they wouldnt allow that. Not to mention not locally peered so it'd mean the data would all be forced to flow to melbourne and back over aarnet adding lag even if they did.

what about moving it to a funded AWS instance? plenty of people here would chip in i am 100% certain.

Its a possibility, but i like that its simple. So far so good, I didnt notice any slow down this morn. I'll see how it goes for a while.

Not big traffic. Either it gets slammed in the mornings because Aussies wake up and check the forums (i know a few of us do!) or because its when the Americans are getting home from work. I havnt really profiled the traffic.
