The auto protocol detect sends a mode 1 request generated by the interface for each protocol until it gets a response. In some 3rd party code (and we dont know whats in your elm327 "compatible") they also send the mode 1 request before locking in the protocol. Nothing to do with BCM. Just saying - is the PCM actually connected? If its not that might be your problem.
