That's pulling a lot of data from the computer lol. Doing that over OBD2 would probably take a second+ to refresh all of the data. Doing it over J3 is probably such a higher bus speed that it's nearly instantly updated. I've wondered how that system works exactly, but too many other projects to really dig into it too deep lol. I'm sure the patched code involves moving calibration data that needs to be live tunable to ram addresses, then it's just a simple read/write to ram to view the current reading or write new data to it while stock it's normally in the ROM (Flash chip) for a lot of the settings/data.
I started the code ripping on a taurus computer since that's what I have most of my work in. I have around 30% of the main loop's logic disabled, no more o2 sensor, egr, closed loop, pats, ac control, evap/purge control, power steering idle up, alt load idle up, etc. There are a ton of calls related to auto trans control, I might eventually set the calibration settings to manual trans but have my own patch to control the trans for 1st + 2nd gear select able via the gear switch (no auto shift logic, more like a semi auto manual trans).
So far the method I've been using to disable code seems to work well and is giving me tons of space for custom patch code. I have to choose how I want the tweaking of the tune/settings to be accessed by the end user, but one way or another I'm sure I can work something out.
If this v6 setup turns out to be a success (in theory should work for ranger, explorer, 4.0L, windstar, etc), then something similar on the v8 side and 4cyl I'm sure would have interest for the demo derby world too.
