Water Injection slows down the combustion rate and hopefully reduces detonation by placing the water molecules inbetween the fuel molecules taking a longer time to burn. Modern fuels have sufficient additives (within reason) to control detonation. Will it replace the EGR valve I don't think so.
Reducing peak combustion temp not only reduces emissions but also improves the life of things like exhaust valves. Most manufacturers saved a $ when forced to fit EGR valves by reducing the alloys in exhaust valves, rings and who knows what else. Get the picture. They are a pain in the arse but if you delete them you may have to consider further engine mods. Off road wide open throttle they are supposed to be closed so really get rid of them just in case they play up which they most probably will.

I think ERGs get a lot more negatives than they deserve due to the diesel dickheads thinking they are A class engineers, but in reality most have the IQ right in the Dunning-Kruger effect range and therefore tout EGRs like they are some evil conspiracy by the automakers.

Yes, a poorly implemented EGR can and does cause trouble, but most are in those poorly designed/built diesel utes and wank mobiles anyway. Diesel engine present more engineering challenges with emissions like EGR, and since they sell lot hotcakes these days, there is less incentive to engineer a good EGR solution with a lot of those wankmobiles. Some of those 4x4s have little issues, so it's not inherent to diesels in particular, but those dickheads like to ruin it for everyone as they do.

Done well which are the majority of petrol cars, EGR is def a good thing and seldom have issues for the life of the car.

Also it's worth noting that petrol engines have much more stringent emission standards than diesel and lead by a number of years on the standard progression, so petrol has to have better emissions equipment from the get go and always had.

If I had the opportunity to play around with adding EGR to the older V6s I would for sure, I think it would be a good thing to add. Pretty sure the EGR stuff in 12P was removed to make space in memory for other stuff, so only maybe the factory code could do it. It's in there when I looked at it, but no idea if it works or not.

Also, has anyone looked at the VY EGR tuning vs the VT one on the factory Bins? I mentioned that VY was way better on fuel than the VT ever was, and even VX was a lot better too from other's accounts, not mine personally, but VY I have direct experience with economy. Maybe they dialed in the EGR and related stuff to get a lot more than they did in the VT, and that might be something you could copy over or else mimic?
