We could be a lot further ahead in medicine today if wasn't for big pharma and there need to maximise profits and control. Creating a cure for a disease isn't profitable where as creating a once a day pill that the patient is required to take for the rest of their lives to mask the symptoms is.

mRNA technology has been around for decades but only saw the light of day with Covid.

Peptides have been around for over a century and everyone has heard of it (insulin for diabetes) except they don't know it and now peptides are big in the news because of the weight loss drug GLP1 and other less known ones been used for stuff that hasn't isn't yet passed regulatory approval in most jurisdictions. Interestingly GLP1 was intended for people with type2 diabetes but it's much more profitable to sell it to fat cunts wanting to loose weight and creating a shortage for the people who's lives actually depend on those types of medications.

But don't worry, I'm sure US Govco will make sure AI is used properly, after all, using it to define war targets is the proper use and when they kill 186 school children in Iran we just shrug our shoulders and carry on getting ready to bomb the next target!

Lets hope AI can fix the human condition (greed) before AI gives us the Terminator in real life when it realises humans are the problem on this planet!

Maybe we can replace politicians with AI, now that would be a truly righteous endeavour!

Future AI still needs to build in natural selection. Think migration is bad now... Pauline will lose her shit.

Pretty much, pharma's drive for profits above all else is what allowed medicine to do harm to people when those harm and risks were known in a lot of cases within the depth of the companies, but sometimes deliberately hidden in the name of protecting profits.

These are the very cases where tools like AI with the right kind of people and motivation could help treat or potentially revere harm done by larger pharma who just continue to ignore harm being caused by their very own treatments.

I am myself a victim of this along with millions of others in the same boat, but still seen by the mainstream medical field as an impossibility up or a rare anomaly, or just plain making up shit, but the evidence is very quickly stacking up thanks to social media and research and activism starting to be taken seriously by starting from a few who were on the inside falling victim themselves. It's crazy to think this sort of harm managed to be suppressed or downplayed for multiple decades and only under the modern social media world we live in now has given the people a bit enough voice to catch the attention of mainstream media and those in the medical field to start investigating properly.

Because of the complexity seen in medicine harm, it will need the likes of AI to unravel the root cause, at this time, no one really has any real clue yet how or why, because for most people this does not happen, but for a subset of people it certainly does and most have a unique set of symptoms and signs, making it all that more complex. Historical attempts for treatment for what seemed the same condition caused by the same medications, results in completely unpredictable results from patient to patient, which makes it akin to treating cancer. Much like, same cancer, different person, totally different result.

In the future, all of our drugs and treatments currently will be mostly a thing of the past, and tools like AI will use our genes and probably current gene expression to allow custom made drugs that will have been predicted for the optimal result without harm since bad interactions would all be simulated and predicted as part of the modeling. A lot of treatments may involve gene editing/expression modification and other molecular engineering to fix or treat root causes rather than the chemical hacks we use to bandaid conditions in today's and past's medicine.

You should try been female.

But yes, when we learn to harness the power of our own immune system it will be life altering.

The best and brightest using AI will create miracles as long as the politicians and greedy rich cunts stay out of the way, some of the stuff I see happening around the world scares me.

The other sad reality is that AI is consuming a lot of power and requires a lot of cooling and that in itself is already creating harm around the world. They are building a large data centre at the bottom of the South Island that is going to consume a decent amount of power and worse, they are going to use a large quantity of clean potable water to keep the damn thing cool which is a waste of what is a finite resource and shouldn't be wasted like that.

If you ever get a chance, you should watch some of the more consumer rights orientated videos from Gamers Nexus about the AI corporate giants taking over and the global, social, economical and ecological fallout it has when in the wrong hands.

Pretty much one man is driving the global shitfest, Jensen Huang, CEO of nvidia.

Indeed. AI is effectively in the hands of a couple of guys of whom I have little to no faith.

The state of medicine in the USA is a lot worse than in AU, and I would guess NZ, but I don't know that. Big pharma is what it is, but medicare in AU keeps prices down, and research grants to academics who want to create something for the greater good are where it is at. For example cures for diabeties are always being looked in to and tested in Universities. When it happens that is where it will be. You are not wrong that if big pharma put the cash in to it, it'd happen a lot quicker, but we just need to be happy for the researchers, grants and donations that keep the good stuff moving. A different spin on the AI vaccine page is from the source at the University of NSW where the magic happened. https://news.unsw.edu.au/en/meet-the-ma ... or-his-dog

Its sad to see the 'bad guys' slandering education, scientists and so these days because in truth these are the people in it for the right reasons and have the knowledge and the skills to do the things.

A big part of the problem with new medicines is getting them over the finish line and certified, something that unless you have a decent amount of money can be very difficult and then you need to consider the certifying agencies like the US FDA.

Here in NZ we have Pharmac that does the buying for medicines but it can be difficult to get the newest medications on the market, even stuff that you guys have isn't available here. You can purchase it privately but at huge costs, something most can't afford and medical insurance won't cover as it's not on the Pharmac list.

We have some world leading research happening here but the hard part is actually getting the breakthroughs to market because of lack of funding to see it through medical trials
