nice work, should get a few more amps to out of a VY alternator, should be 100amp.

yep, 100 amps. Its more for parts availability, better quality components and not having to flog a dead horse when trying to rebuild VR alternators that look like they came from a 50 year old ship wreck from the bottom of the ocean.
The big advantage is also RPM, internal fan type can take a lot more revs and can contain the fans if they decide to explode which is what the external fan type can do time to time.
After seeing an alternator fan wall piece at HQ's place that exploded I have 2nd thoughts on running the older type. Plus they are noisy as f*** and look fugly.
Fits in nice and snug, but it fits

done an awesome job and mod, i can't understand what happened with VR alts. I noticed on my VS upgrading to the 100amp made idling smoother when having A/C, lights etc all on, even though the old ones are 85amps it has a range so at idle i think they were only like 20amps, where as the 100amp models are 40 i think.

35-85 are the old
new is 40-100. According to the stamps on the casing.
I had that discussion with the guys at ashdown ingrams regarding the VR alternator. We came to the conclusion that the older style must be cheaper for Bosch to manufacture.
The rectifier in the VN/VP ones are same diode count and similar stator coil winding to the VY one, where VR had thinner gauge wiring, less taps but doubled up wiring, and the rectified has 2 less diodes. So that might also contribute to for uniform manufacturing leading to cost savings. Casting is heaps cheaper on the old alternators as well.

so im confused, are you running the VS regulator because that's the only one that will bolt on ? from looking at the two I would have said the VN/VP/VR reg would have screwed onto the VS alt ?

The vs onward have a larger rotor winding to they need more current from the reg to drive it so a vn/vr reg will be always over driven. It would work but for how long? Also notice how much room I have from the reg to the fuel rail? Well vn reg would be inside the fuel rail as they are about 4mm fatter. No choice really.

Cases are exact same length, just the VS onward stator and rotor are longer hence why the overall length increases.
The VR reg did just clear on this modded alternator in the first mock up but I later realized that the fuel rail pipe was pushed in all the way as it has no O ring or retaining plate installed giving false clearance, some where around 3mm or more extra that not suppose to be there. If you notice in the last pic, I have the retaining plates installed and pipe fully pulled towards the alternator in the position is would sit when assembled and pressurized with fuel. I very much doubt the VR reg would fit with that in consideration.
