To the OP, I read through the first 45 pages and get the gist of the build. maybe an updated overall shot?

All your guys comments crack me up. I was born in 1960 and grew up in what was a small town 26 miles from San Jose, CA (Silicon Valley). I'm a carpenter by trade and I've worked on a lot of these companies place like Sony, Intel and many others. My first PC was a Everex DX 40 16 bit with 8 megs of RAM running Windows 3 and of course we were still very DOS based. We'd dial into bulletin boards with our modem. AOL was a couple years later. I stood in line at midnight to buy Windows 95 and almost cried when I put my Pentium 60 on the curb on trash day I paid $1300 for the board a chip alone.

LOL.

Pentium! thats fancy. Best chip in the day I could get my hands on as I couldn't afford to buy anything being a kid was a rare 486 DX4 100Mhz
And when I managed to get a board that supported that chips and had both EDO and DIM type ram, before SDRAM was around I scrounged up 48MB with mixed RAM technologies

win 98 SE ftw! I still got my copy of it haha.

Got any gear sets? syncros are all standard for WC T5, gear sets and shaft is where it gets interesting.

There is a lot of stuff still available for them.

So my old vacationer box, 600k of abuse actually turned out to the better box to rebuild.

The one at the transmission shop was yucky inside, everything got a brown coat of corrosion and the syncros looks like they were dragged up from an old ww2 plane wreck at the bottom of the ocean.

Otherwise it was in ok condition according to them. But this is Vlad spec so we can't have that can we?

So here is my 600k flogged to the shithouse T5.

list of problems.

-Slightly rounded 1st syncro teeth.

-Moderately rounded, some chipped 2nd syncro teeth.

-3rd, general minor syncro teeth wear. ironically this gear clashed like fuck and would almost break your wrist. very lazy syncro rings even though they look new.

-Broken rear 3-4 key retaining clip. broke into 3 parts, 2 of which were stuck on the magnet in the case. Had no effects on operation though.

-The big one, fucked reverse gear teeth on counter, 1-2 syncro slider and idler gear. That explains why this box was a bitch to get into R unless you had the gears still spinning.

Previous owner using the car the box came from for burnouts may have been roll back/forward smashing into R.

Other than that, bloody like new! bearings, shafts and gear teeth like brand new. Honestly the abuse this box got its fucking incredible!

All in bits

1st gear, odd 33T instead of the 34T the US use for 052.

2nd gear. 31T, odd as 052 set from US use 30T

3rd gear, 27T just like US 052 set has

So here are the specs on the box.

ID tag 0552-035. So looks like 052 type gearset 3.35 ratio, but not quite.

Main cluster appears to be stock 052 cluster from 052 gear set T5. Typical of 87-94? Mustang
34T
31T
23T
15T
15T

Gears, has cast numbers but no stamped so I can't identify against listed spares. 3rd appears to be a standard 27T from mustang 052 gear set aka 3.35 ratio T5

1st 33T
2nd 31T
3rd 27T

Ratios, none like this in the US based T5, similar but little bit different to the commonly used in Ford 052 set and also similar to the 068 set.

3.25
1.99
1.29
1
0.72

Ok, so for the input shaft. This is 23T and fits all WC with 34T cluster input gear, so thats 052 and 068.

input shafts for T5 are specified by a few things.

-Tooth count.

-length, this I don't know if its total or installed length. Im leaning towards total going by google images. If that is the case the V6 input shaft is 11.7" long and longer than any BW or tremec produced box, beats the viper T56 shaft by 0.2"

-Internal bearing type, pocket or roller.

-Clutch spine and spigot.

^ These all vary depending on application, but interchange is possible for a custom applications.

In other news I ordered a new counter shaft retaining plate from Paul of 5speed.com as apparently he designed them in mid 90s and are made from steel and come with full installation kit, instructions and peel n place shims.

I watched his video and quickly realized mine were copies as they are made from aluminum. I also noticed my holes don't aligned 100% perfectly, then he mentioned that in the video about the hole alignment. fuck! :comp: Anyway, all sorted and ordered. Also picking his brains on T5 gear sets and what not since he seems to have a ton of experience around the T5.

The Third gear issue you mentioned. Mine used to do the same. I switched to DexIII for the oil and solved the problem. And before I get flamed for that. It is actually the specified oil for VR on T5 boxes. I have had issues wit gearbox oil before using the correct grade but just a different brand. Some are slipperier than others and can cause the synchros to not work correctly. For instance on my subaru, I tried the penrite version of the specified grade oil, and gear shifts were really slow. Switched back to syntrax and the problem went away. Syntrax (Which is the right grade for pre VR T5's as specified in the manual) Didn't work in my T5. Switched to DEX III and all was well.

Yes all WC T5 are suppose to run DexIII, Holden for some reason specified oil up to VP where they went AFT like you said.

That said though I run 75W80 ? Penrite with G70 nulon treatment and always have in the 600K box and its a win win combo. I do this in the VR and its changes fine cold or hot for 3rd.

The vacationer was ok when hot but a bitch when cold, it does have a lazy syncro ring. doesn't seem to grip much when pushed together and turned by hand. I can't see anything obvious? maybe the friction material is burned?

Seeing how the G70 treatment coats the steel parts in the box is very interesting. And it seem to accumulates in the bearings and syncro hubs like a light coat of white grease. Thats the teflon particles. It really looks like it has made a big difference preventing metal on metal contact.

There is a similar treatment for ATF to be used in manual boxes. Penrite do one. but Holden specified lubrizol something or other when using ATF in the T5

Take a look at the three engagement slots on the other side of the synchro, have seen them worn out and once the synchro is turned that little bit more the dog teeth don't align (even to the point of completely blocking the shift in one direction).

If you're replacing the synchros with their linings I'd run whatever the manufacturer recommends (probably ATF) and build the rest of it to suitable tolerances. Once they get old and worn out thicker fluids can be helpful but a brand new box will be better with the ATF.

How much did the counter shaft retainer end up costing including freight I'm still yet to order mine from him?
