20T is the way to go, rear wheel hub bearings on an IRS commodore can be a bitch to get moving.

We tend to make up dedicated pieces at work to suit the job. I'll make up a set to do the bearings in an IRS housing shortly.

Found some interesting articles on the Astro A-5 gear sets. From my searching it well seems that no one can fault them and often people go to them when Gforce T5 blow up.

They sure are beefy compared to Gforce and much so over stock.

The torque these things take and abuse they cop on blown V8s in the states is very impressive.

PPG already make a gear set similar but much much higher quality for saloon racing.

I had a little to do with Tony Sarvis at Astro Performance a while back when chasing info about strong built T5's. He is a very helpful guy I found. Helped supply me with a new reverse & 5th gear for my T5 when "thegearbox.org" had run out of genuine stock. He also help me determine exactly what our internal gears & output/mainshaft were from. As I just assume being a Holden it would all be GM. Turns out the gear sets (sizing, not the ratios) & the output/mainshafts were really a Ford T5 part. This ended up making sense as the T5 speedo gear drive was a ford item & nothing like a GM T5 speedo drive.
He also told me about the extra spacing & bronze bushes he was using between gears, after I enquired if these parts he was using would make my box stronger. He basically said I can't use them in my rebuild unless I was doing the whole Astro A5 gear set thing.
I got from him he was using the G-Force parts but also modifying & installing them correctly, where as other gearbox builders were not always setting them up correctly.

Cheers

yeah I got these all nutted out and know exactly which parts fit the Holden t5, yes all ford specs really.

His gear set will fit fine, but I'm trying to see if he'd consider making longer input shafts so that it can be used in the V6.

575 lb of torque is the rating based of 1.5-1.6 ton mustang so the rating will be a bit higher in the much lighter VN-VS chassis, maybe around the 600 torque rating or more.

I thinking there might be a potential small market for these here so I'm seriously considering having them made if its possible.

Well all good luck to you on that.
If available I know I would be interested in building a Stronger T5.

Cheers

Finally found the elusive VL-VN s1 polychloroprene? outer plate boot. I have one of these stashed already for the VP S but has been very hard to find another for this car, I actually need a 3rd for the VR in the future as I am finding not so old 4blok repros completely fucked in wrecked cars and conversions floating around for say as of recently, must be made from cheap china rubber. My VR has one of those in it as it was the only option at the time and it will probably perish sooner than latter.

Problem with the later VN s2 onward outer plate boot is that it was of a different design and rubber type probably natural rubber and have all long perished from ozone cracking.

Interestingly the inner plate boots are all made from the same resistant rubber, so there is a massive surplus of them around. I have like 6 of them including NOS one which I'll probably never use them all.

Plate arrived so I harvested the boot I was talking about.

Still like new! Can see now pliable and shiny the rubber is.
