Re: custom tunning
thanks antus, much appreciate any info ,books or such,i think the biggest leaning curve will be when i start playing with a real ecu, which will we are on the subject i do have one question ,am i able to back up the tune on the exsisting memcal so i can do comparisons and a restore if i need to start again,is it as simple as loading all data onto a spare memcal or is there another way to do this, many thanks for everyones help,it is greatly appreciated, cheers

Re: custom tunning
Most standard bins are in the Memcal tool I linked to earlier so you should have a backup from that. But your prob best off leaving the known good working memcal as is and buying another to modify - can erase and program as you want without fear of not being able to go back to a working one.

Re: custom tunning
ok that makes sense to save the exsisting memcal,i have downloaded the memcal tool as told but am unsure how to veiw those standard bins you mention, when i click on the downloaded file it takes me straight to tp5,is this where i go from to veiw the standard bins or am i doing something wrong again, also want to ask the willems programers seem to come in various prices is the one from canada for about $100 is this ok or is there better, also the uv eraser what brand do you suggest, and is the high speed communication board something that i can buy from you?cheers

Re: custom tunning
Yeah, you view and edit bins in TP5. You need the matching XDF. Some are better than others, but what is available is listed in the program. You need to load that too so tuner pro can make sense of whats in that particular bin.
With the willem, get the GQ-4 version. The cheaper ones that look like a printed circuit board need an old computer, and are less capable and more stuffing around to use. The price sounds about right.
You'll also need an eprom eraser (should be about $20) on ebay so you can erase eproms before you re-write them. But for tuning and experimenting the nvram kit is a lot easyer since re-writing the chips takes time and can only be done so many times before they wear out.
How do you measure your mixtures when tuning carbs? The same hardware may suffice for efi tuning.

Re: custom tunning
thanks antus,
these must seem like very silly questions to all you guys but hey we all have to start somwhere ,i am getting my head around this pretty quickly so bear with me a little longer, you said what is "listed in the program"may i ask which program are you referering to,also the"nvram"where do i buy this ? also all of my saved downloads are going into a file i opened and call my tune file,is it ok to load everything in the one file or should i start seperating,vl400 gave me a link to a tool for keeping bins and xdf's together ,was i right in loading this to my tune file or should i have done different.
now for some humour, you asked how i tune carbs and possibly use the same for efi, well a bit hard ,on the engine dyno we measure what air is used and fuel and comp calculates air fuel ratio, very accurate,on the track it's all ears and plug readings ,primitve i know but works and won many titles doing it that way but for the efi will look at the fastest ox sensors available, testing a mainline unit at the moment and have a fast unit to try as well ,open to suggestions on this topic, cheers

Re: custom tunning
The one VL400 mentioned a page or so ago. Have a look at the screen shot of the program. See the right hand side where you can pick an application, and it says "memcal id" (the sticker on the top of it, or the filename, holdens ID code), then 'bin' with a green smiley face meaning its available, (if you come across one that isnt, once you have the reader please read it and upload a copy for the archive). Then ID - the first 2 numbers are the internal program ID holden used, and those with a letter means they changed it and didn not change the program ID. Those with the same number are very similar, but something minor has changed, so at some point in the calibration an extra byte is added or removed, which throws the rest of the xdf file out by 1. So we coded them with letters to tell the difference.. the different variants. The if XDF is smiley then there is an adx for that program id.. so thats what you load with the bin.zok race carbs wrote:you said what is "listed in the program"may i ask which program are you referering to
For the most part, with custom engines, you will probably want to use OSE12P is its the best defined, supports boost, and can run extra inputs and outputs which really opens your options for conversions. Usually you would only use the late model stuff if you are working on a commodore.
VL400 makes them. They are generally used for OSE12P on the 808 ecu.zok race carbs wrote:also the"nvram"where do i buy this ?

They replace the read only memcal, with non-volatile ram (random access memory, can be read and write, and non-volatile means there is a little battery in the unit so it keeps the data when there is no power.
However you want to sort them. Whatever makes sense to you.zok race carbs wrote:also all of my saved downloads are going into a file i opened and call my tune file,is it ok to load everything in the one file or should i start seperating,vl400 gave me a link to a tool for keeping bins and xdf's together ,was i right in loading this to my tune file or should i have done different.
Ahh yeah. I guess you will need a wideband for efi then. The innovate units have a good reputation. What ever you get should have a 0-5v output (but make sure).. which means you can connect it to an '808 and when you are logging with tunerpro you can see the wideband data along side load and rpm which is a must to work out where to change your VE tables.zok race carbs wrote:now for some humour, you asked how i tune carbs and possibly use the same for efi, well a bit hard ,on the engine dyno we measure what air is used and fuel and comp calculates air fuel ratio, very accurate,on the track it's all ears and plug readings ,primitve i know but works and won many titles doing it that way but for the efi will look at the fastest ox sensors available, testing a mainline unit at the moment and have a fast unit to try as well ,open to suggestions on this topic, cheers

Yeah you'll need to learn a bit about creating folders and shortcuts. I think that app just runs, so its up to you to unzip it somewhere and put it on the menu. Google should be able to help you with that kind of stuff.
