If you have a read of Greg Banish's book Fuel injection systems he explains that 15.4:1 for is best for lean burn, it has the best peak flame temperature for complete combustion, the lean end is also like the WOT end, there is a flattening of the curve before there is a loss either side. His quote is less 5% gain in economy.
