I understand what everyone here is saying, but....
For those who don't know, i own a workshop that has a small showroom where we sell all sorts of spare parts and accessories for cars, one of our best selling items over the last 2 years have been 'black box video recorders', you know, the ones used to capture just about every 'crazy driver video compilation' on youtube.
I sell them to everyone from ma & pa to professional drivers, they all say the same thing 'this will save me drama in case of an accident' or 'this will prove that i wasn't at fault', this is public mentality toward data collection, i recon that most of my customers believe that they are fantastic drivers and would jump at the opportunity to have an insurance company supply them with a data collection device...
People that are car enthusiasts (or hoons) like me and everyone else on here, are more likely to be against this as we (this is only a generalisation, so don't take offence) often break the law when driving a car (i break the speed limit most times i drive) but you know what, if i where to be pulled up on it, i don't fight it, if im prepare to do the crime, then i need to be prepare to do the time. One or two km's over the limit means fuck all in court, as would data showing that from a 'flight recorder', 5 or more, then your in trouble, (we've all seen the tac ads on tv showing how 5 kms over effects stopping/reaction times, so theres no argument there).
I guess what im getting at is that the majority of motorists (that i have come through my shop anyway) seem to like the idea of having proof that they aren't at fault incase of an accident. I don't think that we will win this one. At the end of the day, dickheads will pay more for insurance

Biggest issue that I can see with a dash cam is that if you are in an accident the police can sieze it as evidence. Whatever you have done, how fast you went and even what you said are there and cannot be argued with.
Just know that what works for you can also work against you.

Yeah, but that'd be too easy for them to detect.
Joe.
But they would never know?
Just intercept the speed/rpm commands, and set max limits
Never goes over 60km/hr

No, I don't mean detecting overspeed. I mean detecting a "special" box in the wiring. It wouldn't take long for one such to be detected, then they'd be on the lookout for them. Especially in a serious accident where they go over the car with a fine tooth comb. OTOH, modded ECU/PCM firmware would be inconspicuous.
Joe.

yep, exactly. So if you haven't done anything wrong, who wouldn't want that. If you have however, then you pay for the crime. I don't see the problem with this...

But if you are going to elongate the legal boundaries, why provide an incontrovertible source of evidence?

I assume you're talking about my 'breaking the speed limit most times i drive' statement?
The reason we have speed limits and other road rules is for conformity (ultimately for our safety) if everyone was to conform, then there would be a lot less incident, infact if everyone conformed then only the environment could possibly affect our safety when driving a car on the road...
But im a human, i make mistakes and bad decisions, so its not fool proof, but data collection would show the law who was at fault. Possibly the only draw back is that obd3 type data doesn't factor environment into the big picture...
Yes, i am a hypocrite, if i where to get an automated speeding fine every time i broke the limit, i'd soon conform, just like everyone else.

you know what the funny thing is though, conforming to the speed limit, stopping at stop signs etc, doesn't change the fact that a lot of the people with that attitude still change lanes without indicators, they sit in the right hand lane when theres no one beside them, speed up when overtaking lane starts, and usually do 10 kms under the speed limit and piss everyone off, that's half the reason people get the shits and do crazy stuff to get past them or worse still road rage issues
I will be the first to admit when theres cars around im more inclined to speed to get past them or overtake etc, but I will only do it to get ahead of them so they don't hold me up and so I can actualy use my cruise control instead of fluctuating +/-5kms every 20 seconds!
but its like everything else, theres always going to be slow people, fast people, theres always going to be the ones that will want the new technology like that and there will always be the people that want to make the device to get around them or remove them from the car etc ......
like biggvl says, we are only human, and that's never going to change, police officers are the only ones that can fine you for not stopping at a stop sign or not keeping left etc because the black box can't work all that shit out ..... and I think they are kidding themselves if they seriously think automated fines are the solution to the problem.

Thanks Holden202T. This statement jolted my memory.
I think everybody in this thread is way underestimating where we're all heading with this.
Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to the future, and it's here right now!
