Thanks Psyolent. It used to be to be able to do that type of thing in photoshop you had to either have lots of money or .....
I'm no graphic artist so forgive what may be a dumb question, can this be done in GIMP?

photoshop and lightroom are $10 a month USD now.
not a fan of the subscription model TBH. but, i'd rather pay like that, than pirate it. not into pirating software. people work hard to produce shit, least you can do is pay for it.
i don't know if GIMP can layer like photoshop does. not experienced with it. if you can layer in GIMP then i dare say you would be able to do the same.

I agree with your sentiments although I pretty much use Open Source materials now. Money is a precious commodity to me, I don't spend much and only when I really do need the item or have a long term plan for it.

spent a lot of time doing game development (ie lots of texture making and editing) gimp is fine for editing and does support layers, bit messy and can have a bit of a learning curve...(though easier than photoshop

) the easiest to use is paint net but its limited in the tool department, there are user made plugins that help feel the gaps...the other one Ive used in the past was sherif photoplus free but pretty sure its abandonware now

ah game development. Please do tell.
I used to be a big player in the custom map scene back in the day (mid 2000s) I made many of my own textures. I worked a lot with 32bit iirc TGA formats to support in game transparencies.
16bit worked iirc but a low quality and 24bit was not supported. I think it was for 16bit TGA (8bit colour + 8bit other data, transparency etc) and 32bit TGA i recall was 24bit colour and 8 bit other data so that I understand is why 24bit TGA didn't work. Anyway I could be totally wrong as this was like almost 15 years ago, great times though.

Thanks Wozza, I'm not a graphic artist but very willing to learn especially with open source tools. I'll have a go with GIMP and see if I can give my HDT a clear bonnet for its birthday.
