Im interested in helping finish the kernel for the P59. I have one here, and can happily just solder a socket to it so it can be pulled/flashed without much problems while developing. But seems I will need a crash course understanding that code.

I think it's time to put the kernel code up on github anyway, so I'll do that this weekend and show you the part we're having trouble with. Or at least, what I think is what we're having trouble with.

Excellent. Ill need to desolder this flashchip and get it ready. This ECM looks like its had a hammer taken to it.. so its only fitting it takes a further hammering.

The only socket I've found that is state-side is a MERITEK 980021-44:

I haven't gotten up the courage to try and solder one to a main board yet. I'm guessing it's going to be a:

Lift old flash chip with tweezers and a hot air re-flow wand with SOP-44 nozzle (to get all pins to release at the same time)
Clean pads
Apply solder paste
Carefully place socket
Use hot air re-flow wand with fine nozzle to actually solder the new socket down.

My guess anyway.

I've got everything here to do it. Even a huge lighted magnifier because my eyes are getting OLD!

If you need to pull a chip off, I recommend this stuff https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Chip-Quik-S ... 2897049635 You need very little of it each try, and you mix it with the solder on the chip. It lowers the melting point significantly and makes the job far easier. I have not socketed my pcm at all, the couple of times I erased the boot sector trying to get the P59 full flash code right I was able to recover by pulling the chip with that, reflashing and reinstalling. Still it doesnt hurt to buy a few flash ICs ahead of time so you dont have to wait if you snap a pin.

Thank you! I will order a kit and give it a try. I'll practice on something not important first. My biggest fear is lifting a trace. This Chip Quik SMD Removal Kit would make that less of a problem. I see AdaFruit here in the states sells it.

Yeah it makes work and rework a lot easier. You can bridge all the pins then heat one side then the other back and forth or use a heat gun and it pops off at much lower temp. Then its easy to clean up with solder wick and do similar to reinstall with solder wick to pull excess off so no pins end up bridged. There are lots of demos and tutorials on youtube and various places around the net.

He is by far my favorite electronics engineering youtuber. I think he's located in or somewhere around Sidney. He produces fantastic videos for newbies and makers like me on all kinds of subjects; like how to use an OP Amp, or how to clean up a signal with tons of noise on it. He is very practical and keeps things simple in his approach to EE design.

David Jones is probably more famous for some of his rants about ridiculous stuff he finds on the net. I love seeing him beat up the "Free Energy, Over Unity" guys. And don't get him started on the highways built from solar cells!

Still not working for me and i'm getting the same issue. I disconnected the red plug and put the battery on a charger. Did you adjust any of your Serial settings like baud rate or anything? I'm trying to flash a 2001 2500hd with the PCM in the vehicle. I get the exact same error message.

What interface type? Serial settings shouldnt be relevant. You can post up a txt file with the contents of the debug tab if you want us to confirm it is the same thing. Good for us to have a couple of examples too.
