Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
I hate this time of year....too many damn birthdays that get get in the way of work.
Finally got around to finishing the cage...well i still have to weld in the passenger side harness mounts and add the impact sponge stuff around the
head area,otherwise its done.
Working in 35deg C + temps outside just to get it finished whenever i had a spare hour or two works up a mean sweat.

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
The other thing i did was cut the centre boss out of the original VT steering wheel and machine up an aluminium adapter for the autotechnica wheel.
clean up the wiring and odds and ends and will soon be ready to hit the track.
I have to order the rear coil overs soon and fit the diff into the carclean up the wiring and odds and ends and will soon be ready to hit the track.

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
Well nothing has changed weather wise here in VIC (and WA,SA) with 30deg C + days for god knows how many days.
Sweating like a mongrel in the shed whenever i can.
Latest update:
Went and visited a mate that raced yearsssss ago and he was in the process of building up a supra for club sprints.
He asked why i was doing up a c/dore and my answer was "Parts are easy to get IF i crash it"
I think I've convinced him into doing up a C/dore.....Anyways he had 2 brand new SAAS seats and 6 point harness' ready for
whatever he is going to run.
He wouldnt take no for an answer when he kindly donated one of the 6 point harness'
What could i do? The promise was that he could do the shake down at Calder when it hits the track.
Plus all the bugs should be ironed out when he tackles his and i promised to give him a hand anyway.
Latest pics..... Apart from more padding for the passenger the interior is almost done.
Rear coilovers should arrive tomorrow.
Tru-Trac diff is in,wheel alignment to be done soon,semi-slicks maybe to come.
Have been doing little odds and ends like sealing the front bar/rad support sides for full air flow to radiator etc
in the extra time there is.
Getting there...

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
Mini update.....
Great service by Otomoto in NSW for my HSD rear shocks and springs.
Rang Monday night and delivered the next day
Adjustable ride height via spring plates with collars: Shocker body length adjustable: 16 way rebound adjustment: Fitting in the next couple of nights or the weekend.
Not much left to do 202T....thinking about an underdrive balancer and larger alternator pulley to keep the charge rate down as i've heard
the alternator can get fried staying at high RPMs.
Thats it for now

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
yeah not a bad idea, aslong as they don't idle too much they never usually have an issue, plus you probably have halve the electrics removed that load them up anyways!
coilovers look very schmick!

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
Hi all, long time since my last post and was busy spending time with my beautiful partner after a brain operation and more chemo.
Sadly my life was shattered in mid July after she passed away.
I wouldn't wish it upon anyone and hope you spend precious time with your family.
I have occasionally been out in the shed in the past few months trying to keep my mind occupied.....it doesn't last long.
The last month I have pulled my finger out to try and get the VT ready for next year when the clubs are out again on track days.
Continuing on from my last post in March, the rear shocks/springs are in and have set them at a reasonable ride height...track time will tell where I am
Next up was purchasing semi slicks to go on the 17" SS wheels.
I was after 2nd handies but they seemed to fetch a few bucks all the time and was on the verge of just giving up looking and bite the bullet and shell out for new semi slicks.
Then as luck would have it,whilst I was spending time with my partner in the hospital, these BMW M3 18x8 with Bridgstone RE55s and Toyo semi slicks came up on Ebay starting at $500. I was interested in the tyres but knew that certain BMW wheels had the same PCD as the Commodores except for a slightly bigger hub diameter.
The other good thing was the BM has 5mm more negative offset than the VT rim.
I was after this as I couldn't get more negative camber out of the front due to the edge of the SS rim making contact with the spring collars on the coil overs.
With the BM rim it would sit 5mm further out which would let me tilt the stub inward more before the rim would make contact.....long story short,no one bid on them except me
and at $500 for all that and being 15mins from the hospital for the pick up,sometimes things go your way.
Next up...research!!!! I needed more neg camber A few ways the commodore racing boys were chasing more neg camber was:
Expensive adjustable caster/camber strut mounts -
Adjustable lower control arms (cut and threaded original arms) -
The K-frame lower control arm mount holes drilled approx 20mm further out - this sounded do-able at home.
This k- frame mod had a draw back.....the tie rods only hang by a couple of threads because the knuckes now sit further out
More told me that using the rack ends and tie rods from the EF falcon fixes this problem
Sooooo.....k-frame mod done and a trip to the wreckers for the rack ends and tie rods, Job done! I comfortably get -3.5 camber and room to spare on the coil over collars.

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
racing rubber and 3.5 degrees should help somewhat

Re: VT S1 LS1 track car
Another "feel good" mod I did was thermocoupling the sump/drain plugs on the eng/trans/diff to keep an eye on oil temps.
I picked up this 4 channel K-type digital readout unit for $35.00 and mounted it on the console plate. The sensors were extra, but I already had them sitting around.
I also fitted my old infra red timer from my karting days....probably wont pickup the beacon off the side of the track, just another space filler on the console plate
Where I'm upto now is a change of brakes (again )
A workmate has decided to move to the US for work (his wife is a yank) and heard about my VT build and said he had a set of HSV brakes which were going to be of no use to him anymore
and asked if I would need them.
Hell yeah but at what cost? A figure was agreed (which I was very happy with). He said that the front rotors were pretty much on min thickness but useable, except his mate that lived in woop woop had them.
I said no big deal,i'll get new rotors anyway. So I'm waiting on them and will keep them as spares. So they are 343mm and 315mm HSV Harrop 4pot front and rear....next wallet killer will be race compound pads...Maybe after xmas
These pics are as it stands That's all for tonight
