so I got 495km on 42.8L so that is about 8.6L/100 with highway, city and some city hooning today. At that rate I should get 730km til empty.
Not bad for a tired old bomb but used to get better than that when the engine was fresh. Can't wait to see what I can get out of the VR once I done my stuff.
anyway conclusion, cooling system is important!

yeh all helps with efficiently, looking good! Putting new 82c thermo in my VX which was stuck open, still got 8.6/100 on highway but sat cold.

Alloy head on a Sigma. Can't remember back that far to be confident in saying whether it was corrosion or erosion but the head gasket ended up failing.
I have seen lots of 6cyl Falcon heads suffering really bad erosion along the exhaust side of the head. Ford in their wisdom used only a corrosion inhibitor in the six and coolant in the V8. Expensive cost saving venture for the owners.

you wouldn't believe how many ford 6 heads I had welded and machined. Go ford!
ford went as far as using just water on a ford dealer service plugs charging to change the oil and not actually doing it.

My brother inlaw had a Falcon GT and got the gift they wern't doing the service so he marked the tyre and when he went back to pick it up it was still in the same place with a nice service bill. He disputed it they apologised and did the service straight away and believe it the tester wrote it off during the test drive. Can't win with a Ford.

Mazda dealers are also guilty of this, marked a few parts (filter, plugs etc) which were due to be replaced. Picked car up, invoice says they were replaced but oddly the new parts still hard the same markings

Got some freebies out of that one and never went back.
In terms of coolant I like the Toyota Long Life stuff. The insides of my 1UZ are sparkling still with no sigh of corrosion on anything, stainless steel thermostat is still a mirror. The 5VZ which is alloy head/iron block has no sign of a rust colour on any of the alloy parts.

I had a break down in the middle of an intersection in Melbourne in the CBD. lol that was fun.
over heated and the engine locked up and and I couldn't restart. The problem I noticed few min before it happen was the temp was going up (a lot!) when stationary but normal when moving so I thought the fan wasn't kicking in but I had no where to pull over and it was too late.
It didn't boil over or anything, I think the engine locked up from fuel vapor after I turned it off to prevent it actually boiling over. After a push on to the curb from a friendly truck driver the engine turned fine with a spanner on the crank. I also found I lost power to the ECU. Found the security switch on the door pillar was the culprit, fixed that but the battery was too flat to try to start so the tow truck came and towed it back to the office.
Got a tow back to work and jump started it, works fine no damage as far as I can see, and sure enough the security switch was the blame for not starting, but I have found the fan doesn't kick in, but does in diagnostic mode.
So me thinks the temp sensor has crapped out but only enough to not give an error code? So I am going to go home early today to sort this. Fukkkkk!

This would be the first time I have had a break down as such.
