I was surprised... it just proves the runners are fine, tis the plenum/neck/tb that is the main problem.

Been doing some tuning on a 355, small cam and banana's manifold with 70mm TB and port matched to the heads and as far up the runners as you can get and it was making power past 5500rpm but ran out of fuel pump.
Still waiting for the owner to put it back on the dyno now the fuel system is sorted to see what it'll do.
At the end of the day the banana's manifold was designed to produce low to mid rpm torque, perfect for the daily driver. Was never really performance orientated.

yep the issue is the box itself.
For what it's worth the HSV air box is a bit better better flowing and less of a direction change.
I once went from a complete stock air box. To a HSV top and bottom and a super 6 OTR with a k&n filter.
The improvment was massive this was on a vr 5 litre with a small cam

I'd go with mace CAI better breathing than any of the factory items.
but yes even on a stock v6 with external bolt ons I picked up a huge amount of gains. On a v8 I would imagine even more so.

I found the super 6 OTR CAI to be crap.
Did a heap of logging and suffered from heat soak, only time it was of any worth was when doing long trips on the open road, I even opened up the front of it more but it only really started to work when I removed the plastic trim that seals the top of the radiator to the front panel. The MACE one still suffers from heat soak but it takes longer and it cools down quicker

I lost power with OTR and it went in the bin lol. I never get heat soak in the mace unit, my temps dropped in to the mid/high 20s where with stock air box it was around 40 to low 50s

I suggest making your own and line the box with insulation. That's how I did mine. Worked a treat. I also had a 3" baffled inlet with a 3" pod filter. If I did it again, would be bigger inlet. On my new build will just be a 4" pod filter in the inner guard and I will only make a box if it's too noisy or gets too dirty on the dirt track.

On my red VP im going to use a bell mouthed filter base with the biggest and longest K&N I can fit in there which should be pretty big considering there isn't a washer bottle in the way like the VR.
I don't think the bell mouth will help much but every little bit adds up!

This was my first attempt. Still the best CAI I ever had
I recently made the same mod on the MACE CAI in our VX, the engine now runs cooler
The next job is to line the inside of the MACE box with some 8mm high density foam I have sitting in the garage as well as sealing off as many of the holes that allow hot engine bay air into it as possible, we use it at work to insulate chilled water trays to prevent condensation forming and it works very well.

The insulation is a great idea. Only other thing I would add to your list is a bigger inlet pipe into the box.

And get rid of that concertina elbow. They are horrible for flow.
