Yep it changes the timing, and its very inaccurate as the zero crossing is not sharp. Which makes for a rough idle compared to the right way around, if it'll idle at all. If you use this method dont put load on it until your sure its right and you've confirmed timing with a timing light.

Thanks for all the reply's. I guess I have a 50/50 chance of getting it correct which are pretty good odds.

fortunately you are aware that it is an issue.
lol the race car that was built at my uni last year's engine wouldn't run no matter what they tried :wall: it would crank and fire but then die.. until I looked at it a few weeks ago and noticed that the crank & sync signals had the wrong polarity, swapped them over and it fired up straight away!

Well it would not start, same problem as indicated by charlay86, swaped the wires to change polarity fired up no problem (If i cannot win with those odds no more lotto tickets for me) now to see if it overcomes all the ignition problems I had with the standard optical distributor.
Thanks to everyone for their responses

What do you guys generally use as a shielded wire, a rough person suggested 2 pieces of TV coax which I'm sure would do but I'm not convinced that I'll like the look of it

Perhaps some convoluted tube will have to do

Shielded microphone cable from Jaycar or Altronics works ok, run it in some split tube too. You want the two conductors that wire to the sensor in the same cable and preferably twisted together. This improves noise immunity by being able to cancel out any noise/spikes that are common to both.
