USB adaptor maybe

Hi,
would the following work as a serial to usb converter
found on eBay when looking for something else.

should work its pretty much what ant used for his aldl cable really in princable.

I read the chip number off the pic and found the docs, which referenced this application note:

Its not clear if it will do 8192 baud support. It does not list it in the list of baud rates, but then goes on to show a tool where you can pick configured vs actual baud rates, which does seem to allow non-standard rates. Do you feel lucky?

Its pot luck with most of them, some work some dont and some just work really slowly. The FTDI branded chips generally work though.

I have been developing a USB comms board, so far initial testing seems positive.
There are a few issues with this board however...
1) its far from DIY and is extremely fiddly to solder due to a 0.65mm lead pitch on the FT232R - ie centre to center each pin is 0.65mm from the next and around 0.3mm gap between them. The rest is all surface mount but is regular size components so fairly simple.
2) the cost will be high when compared to the one posted in this thread - at this stage around $90 as its not kit form and takes a fair bit off assembly. The advantages are it has mounting holes for attaching inside a ECM/PCM and does both one wire ALDL and 808 comms all on board.
What are peoples thoughts on this? Is it worth continuing with this board??

seems a lot of people would be keen on USB .that price isnt to bad if you factor in needing an FTDI usb to serial adaptor and the serial boards if you didnt go with the usb version

I dont think its worth it. Having home brew is good, but not when its 3-4 times more expensive than an ebay option. I the ebay board would interface to ALDL with just 1 resistor and 1 diode.
