Just scored myself a vx ls1 5.7 calais, and when i hooked my china obd2 scanner up it will read sensor data but will not read codes.Does anyone know why this is . is there a special command that gm use to get the pcm to spit the codes. If so what is it.
As far as i can see you can only get them with tech2, us703 maxidiag scanner,or has anyone tried the gen 3 cable that is on au ebay for $95.

i bought a elm327 interface for my car and i was able to view and clear codes, might just be the software you got with it .... i got a few programs with mine and some worked better than others with regards to what they did.

So you used it on a 5.7 gen 3 did you Holden 202,and it worked. What software did you use ?
Vl400 ,yeah im going to try that plugin ,only reason that i havent is i thought you will need an adx to suit ,and i have no idea what the obd2 commands are.
Just got an email back from michael gw who sells gen3 cable on ebay and he says his cable converts obd2 to gen3 special protocol.
Would it be as simple as aldl commands such as what we use, just the obd2 version to read and write bin/cals if you had the seed/key.Or do you need to have 4x vpw
Might have to use a port monitor and see what is happening, maybe even start an adx for obd2.

Ive had a bit of a look at OBD2. Tunercat OBD2 looks like the best option from the licensing perspective, but its no longer sold with the exception of with road runner RT kits from moates, which in itself, if it works with aussie LS1 would be quite nice.
OBD2 vehicles have a sh*tload more data on the bus, often too much for USB2. The interfaces have their own protocols and the PC apps need to know it, then they can request the interface to filter the traffic and return only certain PIDs thus fitting the comms in the USB bandwidth. To be OBD2 complient the system must provide a certain amount of standard data to standard generic specs for RTA equvalents to be able to check the emissions of the car etc. Each manufacturer then adds their own PIDs with data specific to their vehicles, and this can be used provided your app knows about it.
I would have thought most DTC were standard, as that is exactly the sort of thing RTAs would be looking for. Most likely as holden202 mentioned, you just need a better app.
I have used torque on my android phone via an elm 1.4 on bluetooth to a VY LS1 with good success on the generic PIDs. I think it did have DTCs, but I was more interested logging and cant be sure of that without visiting my mate and trying again.

Apparently holden didnt fully comply with obd2 till 2006.
Can you use "torque" with windows on a pc.

Nah, its for andrroid phones. And it doesnt natively log to csv, or at least didnt when I tried it. There is some kind of web upload mecahanism, and someone has created an app you can run on your own webserver to get your logs in a database, but log to csv on sdcard would be so much better!

Tried scantool .net and same thing ,reads sensor data but not codes, have tried it with tps disconnected and engine light on.Apparently there is a trick to get a generic obd2 elm327 cable to read codes with gen3 older than 2004.Anyone know what it is?
