if you have a better suggestion then im all ears ?
I've got half a dozen '510' hall effect sensors sitting here on my desk, they're a 3 pin device about 5mm x 5mm x 1mm - a drop of superglue and you can mount them anywhere.
I've got some (Bosch? Marelli? can't remember) HE sensors that are very similar size and shape to a GM ABS sensor, but from memory they're $50+ each.

well i have the abs sensors thats not a problem, i'll try a bit more to get the VL400 interface working, if that fails i'll look into this option! thanks!

the main thing for me is if it ends up under the car, it has to be durable. a mate of mine suggested a hoseclamp on the tailshaft and an abs sensor. some of those tiny hall sensors could be fitted in the speedo itself. more looking needed.

thats one advantage to the abs sensor, its hiden inside the diff and only has a wire exposed to the elements.

so i had a look inside a spare speedo today. no joy on fitting even a small hall sensor near something metal which turns. i'll have a better look underneath and see what i can do off the tailshaft.

What about pointing a sensor at the back of a wheel hub and let it count the heads of the wheel studs?
Or the tailshaft nuts on the diff pinion yoke?

i've thought about the pinion bolts but theres really no where to mount the sensor on the diff is the main issue there....

i was looking at a hall effect sensor which would screw into the pto cover on the gearbox and read one of the countershaft gears.

a mate has some caterpillar engine speed sensors which may work too.

Wouldn't the countershaft give you a product of engine speed, not road speed?

as usual, you are correct. it also doesn't turn in top gear. i'd better have another look and see if i can use one of the output shaft gears.
