DS1245Y ICs too expensive? Then why not make your own?
Take one 128k low power CMOS SRAM chip (681000,628128 etc), add a memory controller IC and lithium battery,
and you have a DS1245Y-70 compatible NVRAM for about $10.
It programs set as a DS1245Y device, and has the added advantage that you can change the battery when it's flat instead of binning it.
Here's my dead bug style prototype - don't laugh, it actually works
I might get a couple of pcbs made up - for some reason that one looks a little too fragile to stick in an ecu, but nothing a bit of hot glue couldn't fix
