Delco with DIS onto Nissan TB42

Post by Brett S »

G'day All,

First time poster..
About a year or so ago i started aquiring all the parts to efi the old TB42 motor. I got all the partsfrom a vn v6 and bought all the new parts to make it dis using the 1928A module.
I followed how someone on here i believe did an old hemi and milled the harmonic balancer to have the 7 timimg pickup points.
Now haveing alook at my balancer there is no room to fit a lasercut plate behind it as it is very close and the pulley goes pretty much to a knife edge, so milling into this will surely cut into belt. Now i could remove one of the belts and use the pulley but i would like to maintain the twin belts as i do use it offroad and have previously broken a belt from a stick getting caught (powersteering only though).
So my question to the guru's: is it possible to put the crank sensor into a gutted dissy? I understand that i would require 14 not 7 timing marks.. The problem i see is that i would only have a trigger wheel of around 60mm diameter. This would therefore require tiny grooves which may cause bad signal quality.
Is there specific sensor's that have a very narrow pickup area that would be suitable for say 2mm groove?
PS i don't want to do the single coil setup.

Cheers

Brett

could you not put the plate in front of the balancer instead of behind it? when we put DIS on the datto A14 we just welded a 5 mm plate with the notches cut in it to the front of the balancer.

is it an option to run the crank trigger off the flexplate ?

I started drawing up a crank trigger to run a 4 cyl DIS module on a twin dizzy V8, it also needed to have 14 teeth/notches but after drawing it they started getting fairly small even with a largerer dia trigger wheel. But after looking at axle mounted ABS trigger wheels it should be ok still if you use thicker steel for the trigger.

I suppose I'm being lazy realy.
Using front of pulley not an ideal option as sensor will hang out waiting for foreign objects to hit it. Flywheel is a headache, have you seen the size of the motor. Used a forklift to get it out last time due to height required to remove it.
The flywheel does have material that if I mounted the sensor from sump screws (not ideal) I could use drillings for timing marks in back of flywheel but would have to weld up the balancing holes... I suppose could put it into solidworks and work out the holes required to rebalance it. Or knowing that it only revs to 5k ignore it.
Abs sensors do seem to have lots of teeth might have to look at these and see how small the peak is for there relative diameter and rpm.

does it absolutely have to be crank trigger ? it sounds like using a dizzy will save a lot of headaches in this instance.
