Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
yeah mine does that, tappety for good few mins, done that on the old engine badly @190k and the new one started at 140-150k. I conclude pretty much all L27s do that lol. Doesn't seem to effect them though as my engine is well past 200k and still runs good.
Seems its oil supply related because when I use 10w-40 it doesn't do it much 15w50 it does it much longer.

Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
could probably get away with using 0w40 as it will be thinner when cold

Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
yeah i would in ecotec but not keen on pre ecotec.
I use 10w40 in winter and its fine. 15w50 in summer.
they both get watered down with my style of driving after 5k. They come out a little diluted with fuel but not black, sort of caramel color.
So I don't want to go any thinner for that reason.

Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
thats a good thing, means they are cleaning the shit out of the motor instead of leaving it in there!
No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
there is not shit in my engine, its silver inside just like factory new.
Anyway this clickaty clackaty sound it makes is only on engine decel. if I hold or increase the revs there is no sounds, soon as the revs are dropped the lifters click away until revs stabilizes, does this more when cold and seems also when the oil is thicker. Once warm its still present but not noticeable.
I am thinking its a stretched timing chain.

Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
thats good then sign of a well serviced motor!
have you tried increasing the idle by say 100rpm and see if it makes a difference, kinda sounds like not enough oil pressure at idle maybe ?

yes the engine sat in some guys shed for 12 years with only 80-90 odd k on it. I use penrite synthetic oil every 5 k, same type of oil always, even used penrite break in oil initially to flush any incompatible old oil out first.
as for the noise, its at all revs, just on deceleration only.

Could be worn big end bearings.. if it starts to get louder you might want to pull the sump off and have a look.vlad01 wrote:as for the noise, its at all revs, just on deceleration only.

Re: VP V6 Vacationer - Turbocharged Build
nah its lifters for sure, sound clearly comes from the intake manifold, like a cascade of little ball bearing bouncing on a glass table.
I know all too well what big end sounds like. maybe I should make a vid.
its not any louder than it was at 150k, still exactly the same amount of noise.
the other thing it could be is the lifers are running out of lash from recessing valve seat faces. Not sure about these engines but it was common on the latter 4L fords, BA and alike.
I still think its timing chain stretch as the noise comes from decel in which the valve train would lash the opposite direction and timing would flutter about for a bit and the fact its common problem, although it doesn't effect the engine enough for most people to notice anyway.
