I'll give that a try tonight.

Its a ftdi usb to serial converter. I was having issues with a non ftdi chipset, so I had to get one.

Edit: typo

Have you tried connecting Tx and Rx the other way around to the ecu? the ecus Tx needs to end up at the PCs Rx, but the labelling depends on your context.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

Try swapping tx and rx on the ecu side. I think the 'in' and 'out' words were an afterthought when making that pic and there may be an error.

Heres some pics of something similar I assembled the other day which is working. Next time I do it with USB though im going to source power from the PC side as the driver detection happening at key on key off has been a pain with this one.

i connected the tx and rx pins on the serial ttl converter, opened up a terminal and i was able to type characters and have them show up in the terminal.
just to be sure, when i type the following into the terminal "abcdef" i should get "abcdef" on the screen right? or should it be like this "aabbccddeeff"?
Note: i was getting "abcdef"

i was able to get tunerpro to detect the cable as well (although it didnt work the first few times but then suddenly worked. i didnt change any cables, i just kept trying).

i tried swapping the tx and rx pins on the converter and i still am not getting any data on tunerpro!! ARGHHHH

i dont know what to check now.......
