Hello all,

Well it's about time I finally got my @ss into gear and joined the Delcohacking site. I have been working on a delco conversion of a 1984 50th Anniversary edition Nissan 300ZX for over two years now. Yeah that's been a while, lucky it's a hobby and not a daily ride.

Originally a N/A automatic, there has been a few changes. The previous owner started by dropping in the Turbo engine, and that is about as far as he got. The rest of the work has been done by myself with the help of Antus, Ross from the garageofawesome.com.au and much technical support from VL400.

The project has reached the point where it has been able to drive down the local servo for $20 of fuel and 32 psi in each tire. More work to go, and I will cover the mods so far in additional posts.

First modification, automatic to manual conversion:

3x Borg Warner T5 manual transmission were sourced from the united states of awesome. Turns out only one fit in the car, who would have thought..?

**Note : Coopers bottles for scale purposes only!!

Custom one piece tailshaft made from the old two piece. Turns out the AU 2+2 is about 25 cm longer than the US release, and the US tailshaft had to be lengthened and strengthened. R200 Turbo diff came in the same shipment and was swapped in as the N/A ratio = 3.7:1 vs the Turbo = 3.54:1

Here's some mods that are directly Delco related. The intake manifold, collector, plenum and trottle for the 1984 300ZX VG30ET was replaced with the equivalent from a ~1992 Maxima VG30E.

The driving factor for this was a switch from top feed low impedance injectors, to a fuel rail high impedance injectors that can be driven directly from the Delco with no driver box required.

Instead of using the HAL effect crank sensor, we have been working with VL400 to modify his ignition module to operate off the OEM Nissan optical crank angle sensor in the factory distributor.
A few modifications were made to the original design, but we now have a working prototype. Does anyone want to delco a Nissan VG, RB, SR or CA engine and use the factory distributor..?

We tried to use a single LS1 coilpack and distribute the spark via the standard distributor, we failed but in hindsight I suspect it might have been a result of the spark plugs. But we will never know because now we have 6x LS1 coilpacks running fully sequential ignition from VL400's custom ignition module. Very awesome!

Lastly this 'hot water bit' was swapped in from a late 80's Navara 4x4, which also has a VG30E. This particular part gave us the water temp sensor needed for the Delco, and the water temp gauge sender that was lost in the manifold swap. A new inline filler seen in the picture was needed to replace the original filler located in the 'hot water bit' that was replaced.

Thanks for the support guys!

And the massive error light is not for comical effect, the theory is that at the track you have eyes for nothing but the track. No time to watch gauges and dials.

We plan on routing anything and everything we can through the delco and have a single point of warning for errors.

That would be a bright strobe light, get yours from jaycar for $19. They are self strobeing so just hook it up the 12v and ground it out to the delco error line.

It was very funny however when the tune was running so rich it filled the shed with smoke, and all you could see was a bright orange strobe flashing thru the smoke. Looked like something from a sci-fi movie
