Where can I get software and cables?

I've been out of hotrodding for quite a while. I have been doing maintenance and repair on european vehicles since the mid nineties. I recently purchased a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am and am interested in doing performance work on it. Where can I get the necessary cables and software to tune this vehicle. It's becoming obvious to me that I have a considerable learning curve to get on till I'm proficiant at these type systems. Any reading material you could suggest that would be helpful in understanding the design and concept, input-output parameters, power supplies and requirements. I'm am certified master technician and was a part time instructor in the mid and late 80's, but I have been out of the performance arena for some time. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
