Ok so we have two dogs, and we also have a nice vegie garden that the dogs like to sleep and ocassionally excavate!!! and we have been trying to work out ways of keeping the dogs out of the garden, i suggested electric fence, but the wife isn't real keen on that option :(

i setup a IP camera to watch the yard when im at work and sure enough dogs going in and such, so i had a thought, we have a sprinkler system running through said garden and the dogs don't like water, so then i had another thought to bridge this gap!

so i did some searching on ebay and found a usb powered and controlled interface that allows you to switch relays on and off, perfect!

i then found a 12v water solenoid.

so then i went to the local hardware store and found all the required adaptors to fit it to the tap and plug the hose into the other end!

so i then sit at work with this :P

so i have the laptop setup with the ip camera in the back ground and on the right over the top i have a remote desktop connection to the server in my shed where the usb device is plugged into :) there is speaker wire running down infront of the ute to the back of the house where the solenoid is connected.

so far this morning there has been one "spray" when the dogs were in the garden and thus far they haven't been back in :)

best of all its so much fun

yes highly recommended :) the solenoid was like $10 and the relay module $25 i think so relatively cheap for the satisfaction gained!

You could go fully automated and have a shop doorway style IR beam in front of the veggie patch activate the sprinkler whenever the dog breaks the beam ;)
But don't discount electric fences completely, my dog had a run in with mine once and 6 months later still wouldn't go anywhere near the wire even though it had been turned off for ages
