Engine VIN-RPO Codes

Post by DieselBob »

Trying to gather some info on holden engine codes.

Looked at the US GM RPO codes and they dont match the Australian engines.

I've got the owners amnual for base model VN, VR and early VE. None have any V8 related codes.

Wondering if any one has others if they would be willing to scan the VIN page and either post here or send to me.

Cheers

Bob

VIN and RPO are 2 different things.
From around VX they went to 6G1 vins, the 8th letter is the engine fitted to the vehicle.

http://vindecoder.eu/holden
B= Alloytec 175, F = GEN III V8, 7 = Alloytec 190, U = LS2 I think

RPO's are used for manufacturing and engineering to release parts against so the car can be built, engine RPO's typically start with an L.
LE0, LW2, LS1, LS2, LB9, LSA, LY7, etc.....
These are also used and the dealer to find the right parts for a particular vehicle.

Exactly what I'm looking for.

The VIN and RPO's are related the VIN character is a reference back to the US GM RPO engine list.
All engines start with a L.

The LY7 is the first and second gen VE
I think the LLT is a sidi - 3rd
And the LFX the current version. VF

What I'm looking for is the VIN character and its engine equivalent.
"B= Alloytec 175, F = GEN III V8, 7 = Alloytec 190, U = LS2 I think"
More like these.....

This still leaves a cross over to the RPO but its easier than flying blind.

The 6G1 VINs started in 2002 and follow the US format.

Have you done a google search ? Most of the info will be easy to find, once you know it it's easy to work out, normaly the 1st few are country of origin, body style (sedan, wagon, coupe etc) luxury level (calais, berlina, SS etc) then motor and box ? Wish I could help more but I've forgotten a lot of the codes

The VIN is easy, loads of info there's a complete wiki with manufacturer specific codes.

What I'm looking for specifically is the Holden VIN Character for the Engine and the Type of Engine The 9th VIN character represents.

There's ---------------------------------------VIN Character
LN3-----VN Series I--------------------------H
L27-----VN Series II and VR----------------H
L36-----VS to VY Ecotec--------------------H
LY7-----VE------------------------------------B and 7 depending on Kw
L67-----Supercharged L36------------------S ? and R ?
LW2----LPG----------------------------------N
LS1-----5.7L V8-----------------------------L ? and F ?
LS2-----6.0L V8-----------------------------H ? VE 6.0L ?
LB9-----304 V8------------------------------ M - VT SI, U - VS

The old 304(308) cant find any info for the later generation commodores???

BUT I cant find the VIN character that represents all the engines available?????

Anyone confirm these???

Edit: Didn't like the white space had to make it more readable
VS SS - Updated Thanks - - - Again

That's funny it goes back a long way, in HQ L32 is 4.2ltr and L31 is 5.0ltr, I assume that the L designation stands for longitudinal sought of like the transmission designation, 4L60e being 4 speed, longitudinal 60 torque rating and e being for electronic

Ahhhh

Back in the good old days of serial nmbers and chassis numbers.

Again heaps of info there to, whole web sites for differant models and names.
Old holden has a massive amount of info.
VB to VK/L have been documented to.
From the mightly VN onwards is where it gets a bit thin.

When the Number format changes there seems to be a reallocation of the characters as well.

I've had a good hunt around and ended up back here asking people to look at their owners manuals..

Edit US GM RPO ----- L31 8 Cyl 5.7L CPI ------------- L32 6 Cyl 3.8L SFI V6 Supercharged

Seems Holden had their own RPO that is not in the public domain
