Got myself a VE SS S1 ute
Its the new pride an joy!
I think my favorite feature on it is that it drops to 4cylinders while cruising and the economy beats my old VY V6, and even gets close to the Hyundai i30 thats here.
Iv heard alot of bad remarks about this "4cyl" mode, that it never kicks in or causes alot of issues and dramas. Does anyone have first hand experience with these problems? Or have any comments on this feature? Is this feature modifiable in efilive or hptuners?
I see my ecu can be updated to a newer version, but now Im hesitant on updating the ecu calibration as I think it may ruin this nice 4cyl mode as it works no worries currently!

I hired one once, I think it might only available on the autos? Its a flag in the manuals but its turned off. Not sure if it works if you simply turn it on. When I had that car (it was a hire car) I booted it around cairns for a couple of days and loved it. I didnt see any problems with the 4 cyl mode, as soon as I hit the go pedal it immediately went back to 8 with no faltering at all. I suspect the complaints come from a mental thing. I used to know a guy who had one, and his take on it was that he wanted his v8 to waste heaps of petrol and destroy the world and he seemed proud of it

. He hated the 4 cyl thing just out of principal and was prepared to bag it in conversation. I tried to explain that by having a euro 3 compliant modern car in good condition it was efficient when not driven in anger and was cleaner than many older cars. He was offended that I could say that!

u sure its not a series 2? or is it a very late series 1. I didn't think s1 even had dod (displacement on demand) in the motor. it was removed after problems in the vz l76 models.
my ve ssv A6 was an 07 series 1 and it didn't have DOD.

it can't just be turned on, as the motor has different lifters and different part in the valley to make it function, I've seen a lot of kits to delete it, because people want to put bigger cams and such in and need to do that first apparently.

There is actually a enable/disable setting in the tuning software, but yes to delete it properly you need to modify internals AFAIK.

I think it might be an Auto thing. Id imagine it be pretty hard for the car to manage changing between the two modes in manual because of the unpredictability of a driver?
I drove a VE SS S1 manual a couple weeks ago, that that didnt have the DOD (Or AFM if thats what its called?).
Honestly (To me) is a brilliant feature of the car. I dont drive too far these days so its just a list casual cruise which uses 4cyl the whole way.
Im all for having the power available! But whats the point of using all 8cylinders when cruising on the freeway or main roads, it kicks into all 8 super quick regardless.
Iv read up on alot of people never getting it to meet the "specific" conditions for the vehicle to go into 4cyl mode. Could be due to the condition of the car/engine or the mods that have been performed. Probably a bit of both if they want mooaarrrr ppooowwaaa.

Its a VE SS (not SSV) 09 my9.5 (Series1), and has the AFM badges on it. So Im guessing it must be a late series?

So.. does that mean it can just be turned off?.
I dont imagine Im going to want that anytime soon! But, if I was to some performance changes, I dont want to be listening to a horrible done on the 4cyl mode!

most tuners seem to turn it off when they do a tune by default

yes, simple software switch turns the dod off/on.
