pretty scary, the potential for shrapnel to be sprayed by some of the affected airbags!
though holden claim they didnt use any of those airbags in australia, so if they are not lying, then most of us on this forum should be ok

That is fairly bad (and getting worse) but I have heard about this problem before.

They are gonna get butt raped by the courts in the US over this. I hope the company has deep pockets to pay for all the replacements and the fines they will be looking forward too.

My cars all pre-date airbags - so I only have to worry about things like lack of crumple zones, steering column impalement, inadequate seat belts, locking brakes, wooden steering wheels....
Still, compared to a non-SRS-equiped car I think getting a face full of shrapnel is sort of a step backwards in safety

Having watched an airbag be deployed, I can guess how damaging it would be if metal fragments were jettisoned towards your head

Yeah, apparently its like having a basket ball thrown in your face. Add some metal fragments in the mix and it wont be pretty.

The missus has a '99 Camry that we bought off her father about 5 years ago. Back when he still had it it was involved in an airbag sized accident so it would have been replaced. Even though the car is outside the date the airbag may not be. Parents-in-law are both gone now so can't ask them when the accident was.

<- Edit. No safety devices on my avatar.

Thats a good point wonder if is true for any car that has had a bag replaced after the affected date if it could now be faulty?
You would hope they have thought about this tho..

What about if the replacement airbag is worth more than the car ? Will they just pay you out for the car and then scrap it ? This is going to be a big can of worms

Probably not otherwise you have a car at the wreckers with a defective airbag someone can play with or fit to another car they'll just carry out the recall as if it is a brand new vehicle
