Worst mistake
So been a while since i posted.
I fitted a 2nd TH700 & standard stall. I rate this 1 of the worst mistakes in my life.
Then I brought a 13" 2500rpm stall convertor. Made it drivable, but certainly unpleasant.
Yesterday i re fitted the TH400 & 9" hi stall. Goes like a scald cat now.
The reason i pulled it out was at 100kph in 4th, the motor was out of the camshafts power band.
In the time i had it fitted, i saved no fuel.
Anyway, maybe i need to fit some 3.90 gears to take advantage of the 0.7OD but that is on the back burner.

Re: 1977 HX GTS
If the 400 is that much better for you, perhaps going the other way with the diff gears (taller) and keeping that would be better? The 700 is fine for many applications but that very short first ratio doesn't really work with high diff gears. The big leap to second is probably one of the reasons you didn't like it too.

Re: 1977 HX GTS
what gears are in it now ?
i reckon the T700 is great for an all rounder, but obviously with the right cam or diff gears its not going to be as good, but you need to gear everything to suit the cam i guess ....

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

3.25 at the moment.
235/40/17" tires
I have been thinking about get a CRS conversion kit to bolt up the v6 box. I have a few of them lying around, and the convertors are smaller in size

Re: 1977 HX GTS
yeah might go alright with 3.5ish diff ..... hard to say though without knowing what the cams power range is and what rpm it cruises etc....v8slrtorana wrote:3.25 at the moment.

i see no point getting a v6 box, for the cost of the adaptor plate and such you'd probably be able to get the right converter built to suit the V8 box.

Re: 1977 HX GTS
not to mention the high failure rate of the v6 auto, I have had the good luck of 5 autos fail for 4 cars registered, regularly driven, all stock v6. so 125% failure rate lol.Holden202T wrote:yeah might go alright with 3.5ish diff ..... hard to say though without knowing what the cams power range is and what rpm it cruises etc....v8slrtorana wrote:3.25 at the moment.

Re: 1977 HX GTS
how is it any different to the V8 box ? as far as i am aware its just the bellhousing ???
i've never heard of a failure of one that was not from abuse/too much power or old age/neglect .... !?!?!

Re: 1977 HX GTS
well... ive owned 4 cars with 4L60's and have zero fail..... so thats a 0% failure rate (LOL) maybe vlad, you are either unlucky or hard on your gear. my point is .... the 4L60 isnt a bad gearbox because one vocal person has had issues with them

Got 415,000km out of the one in my VT when it was written off was still going, only intermittent problem with TCC. Current VY has 350,000+km and still running fine, touchwood.
