Ecotec Manifold Porting

Post by Jayme »

so I thought id throw up a thread about some of the interesting stuff that is being done on my mates race car....

as some of you know, its a mongrel of a thing, ford escort with a twin turbo commodore v6 engine. recently we cracked the pistons of the VR v6 from an overboost (issues with wastegates) and so since there was a spare ecotec 4.2 stroker engine from another cancelled project, he decided to put that motor in instead.

this new motor has a forged bottom end, nice sized cam and cleaned up chambers and 2x GT3582R turbos with .7 rears.
just the other day he showed me some of the manifold porting he did to maximise the benefit of the 70mm throttle body.

manifold mods:

front on shot - pre grinding.
front on - needs more grinding

same as previous setup, pipe goes over the wheel between the spring and the guard skin and out the gap between the wheel and the front door.... only problem is the guard gets bloody hot :P so dont lean on it after a race.

Nice work.
The alloytech has a similar restriction just behind the TB, there is a company that has cast a new upper for them just need someone with a bit of vision to do it for the ecotec as well.

pointless really with the lim being too restrictive. The required runner cross section is actually bigger that the outside of the runner casting lol.

haha all of it is a bit redundant given wind boost tap up... force more air in....

how did you come to that conclusion vlad? a pc simulator or have you tried this on a flow bench yourself?
with most of this stuff, you can believe rumours, but you will never really know until you try..... be interesting to see this one on a flow bench and compare real results. I dont believe software sims.

mathematics and real life dyno and known configurations of other successful engines that are similar.

Im sure Big G is willing to share a photo of the runners cut of at the base. Its disgusting  even ported upper plenum with the 69mm tb is a choke we found with dyno testing.

I have already prototyped some of a custom new intake. The new race car will have the real thing made.
