I don't mean to disagree but they had a racing class called Commodore Cup that used 253s that put out 300 HP. They can be made to work well but people don't like them because they are considered to small to do anything with.

only going 253, mainly because its there aha, and a ute is a better ute with a v8, ive got 2 304's here both vr autos, but the ute will always be a manual, and i didnt feel like spend $1000 to get a falcon T5 behind one, as the 4speed i have has a trimatic pattern belhousing not a turbo, ill run the fluffy for a while, than itll mostlikely go 308-355 with a little weiand 142 or 177 on it and try and squeeze it under the bonnet, efi heads do fit on a 253, just have to relieve the block a little or the valves, and run an efi cam, since the valves are in different spots
why have one 202, when you can have 12 and counting, 30+ car graveyard just for fun aswell

yeah teh 253 can work. there was a fellow doing the rounds EVL253 I think he was called, he had a wagon with a weaponised 253 in it which went extremely well. but like anything, throw money at it and it will work in some way shape or form.
the 304 heads do bolt onto the 253 but as HQ said there needs to be reliefs die grinded (ground?) into the block to stop interference.

I had access to a NOS 253 long block for about 2k or so. Not sure if the guy still has it as it was last year. I may have even posted it on here?
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

NOS anything is always good to get hold of, theres an early commodore wagon vb i think, burnout car thats a 253, but its about 292 cubes and pumps 515hp at the fly, video on youtube of it,

if my new clutch mechanism turns up soon, ill be putting it in on the weekend or during next week, since i have a boss that told me i need a holiday....

I believe they are quite under square and this is a problem for performance applications but throw money at something and it will go.

..........under square.....interesting..............diesel truck engines which require low RPM torque and high thermal efficiency more than high power density most commonly adopt an undersquare engine geometry.
so run it on diesel :D

Yes it is under square but that never stopped performance engines.

Engine Size Bore x Stroke
Holden 253 3.62 x 3.06
Holden 308 4.0 x 3.06
Holden 350 4.0 x 3.48
Chev 302 4.0 x 3.0 Racing
Ford Windsor 302 4.0 x 3.0
Ford Boss 302 4.0 x 3.0 Racing
Ford Cleveland 302 4.0 x 3.0
Pontiac 303 4.121 x 2.840 Racing

When built to a purpose (e.g. Commodore Cup, Trans Am, V8Supercars, performance street) the major limiting factor of any engine is initial design. The 253 is less under square than the 308 and the various 302s. The problem was its ability to breath (small valves), manifold, and the carby (mostly a stromberg that was more at home on a pedestrian 179-186-202).
