Twin Turbo GM Ecotec V6 powered Ford Escort - AKA "The Mongrel".
Hi all,
This is my drag car. I have done all of the work myself, Jayme has been my tuner/technical adviser along the way and has been bugging me to write a thread for a while. There has been a bunch of history that will take all night to write out, so ill mainly concentrate on the current specs. the short story is that initially, I built it with a twin TD04 turbo buick, and after many hours of playing and new parts and retunes, gearbox upgrades, brake upgrades, etcetc we blew a motor and decided to repurpose the Ecotec I was building for my road car, and use it for the drag car instead.
The car is a 1979 mk2 2 Door Ford Escort, with an R31 skyline 28 spline Diff Mounted on a 4 link rear end, commodore rear brakes, Volvo 4 pot front brakes, 2x VH44 remote mount boosters (one for front/one for rear), front coilovers, headlights removed to make room for intakes.
Engine is a Ecotec v6 with Come 4.2L stroker Crank, Diamond Pistons with file fit rings, H beam Rods, Girdle, ARP bolts throughout, 0.060" cometic gaskets, 1.6 ratio yella terra rockers, custom Camtech cam, 70mm throttle body and cut/welded/ported and enlarged neck to suit. After cracking a pair of heads, went back to stock heads for now, with stainless valves, manly springs+retainers etc. providing Boost are 2x GTX3582's with 0.8AR rears each mounted on a custom 3 into one exhaust manifold, feeding a 2 in, 1 out front mount cooler and 3" mandrel bend dump pipes exiting behind the front wheels.
controlling this is a VR auto computer running 11P, 1000cc injectors and a VL400 coil converter box driving 6x ls2 coils. The sad 4L60e is being replaced this week with a built TH350 with manual valve body and 4000rpm stall converter.
This week I finally made it to the Dyno and after a few hiccups with dwell settings, and a pair of shit tyres that kept frying on power runs (dynos hate slicks so I had to run an old shit pair) , we got it to 425RWHP at 17psi boost on 98 octane pump fuel before it blew a tyre. this dyno reads light, so these are real hp we have taken cars to 'gold coast special' dynos and they read 50hp more!!
ill let the pics do the rest of the talking. Apologies for the shitty iphone pics. ill take some decent ones once the front end is back together.
