Thanks The1.

Will definitely be looking through ebay, but will only purchase if I can pick it up locally in personal as Junior wants it fixed yesterday.

First step is take it apart and see exactly what parts I need. Will know more once it's in bits.

Thanks again everyone for all the help/advice. It's been invaluable.

Find out what you need and take the list to Repco, Bursons, Auto One (do they still exist?). You will pay more than on ebay but at least you are able to speak face to face with a human being whose job relies on your satisfaction.

Well, I hit my first hurdle at the first hurdle.

Seems I need a special Torx bit (https://www.amazon.com/TEMO-Torx-Plus-5 ... B00GXW47TY) to remove the bellhousing.

So can someone tell me, do I need to remove the bellhousing or can a rebuild be done with the bellhousing in place?

Thanks.

Well I have an answer. The bellhousing must be removed. The O ring around the pump stops the pump from being removed while the bellhousing is in place.

Now to try and find a tool specialist that even knows what a Torx Plus bit is, let alone have one on the self.

Snap-On seems to be the only lead.

The Quest continues...

WOW!! Thanks Tazzi. VY7C1 even mentions the 4HAD revision which is exactly the one I am working on. Will be doing lots of reading tonight.

Thanks Simon, but they're all Torx bits, not Torx Plus. Shapes are different.

Rang Bunnings, Total Tools, Alltools, Repco, Bursons and a couple of specialty tool suppliers. Only 1 of them knew what a Torx Plus was (needless to say, it wasn't Bunnings) and he stocked them, but only up to a 40, and I need a 50. The only other place I could find one was Snap-On, at $82 each.

Finally, hoping a transmission parts specialist would surely be able to help, I rang Approved Transmission Parts in Brunswick who supplied the rebuild parts for my previous rebuilds only to be told by the bloke on the phone that he had never heard of a Torx Plus bit. So I said to him, "it's the tool I need to remove the bellhousing from a 4L60-E", to which he replied, "Well fuck me, we've got 2 of them and I've never heard of Torx Plus before" & it was only $30.

So, quick run to Brunswick to pick up the Torx bit & I figure that while I'm there I might as well get frictions, a band and a gasket set, hoping that no other parts will need replacing and I'll save myself a trip tomorrow. Not including the Torx bit all the parts came to $193 which is cheaper than anywhere I have looked. The frictions he supplied had a 6 stack clutch pack and he told me that it suits 90% of the 4L60 transmissions, but should I find something different upon dismantling the transmission he would be happy to exchange.

Sadly, upon opening the files Tazzi sent me 2 post ago I found the exact revision of the transmission listed, a 4HAD, only to discover I need a 7 clutch pack. :sad2:

So back to Brunswick tomorrow to get a 7 pack clutch friction kit.

Chuff - google 'Transmission Bench 4L60E' - there is a dude who completely rebuilds a 4L60E with documented YouTube videos. Its a very VERY good set of videos and will give you some handy tips along the way.

Like MAGP says most trans places will sting you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for the smallest of rebuilds, something they can do very very quickly and profit from, very very quickly. The upside to them is they do have the experience however.

Thanx for sharing on the torx plus. FM I've never heard of that action either.

Thanks psyolent.

Having rebuilt a couple of non-electronic 4L60 (T700) trannies for the 1993 VP Calais I had back in the day, I'm more than comfortable that I know what needs to be done, my only concern from the start has been what revisions have taken place between the 1993 4L60 and the 2003 4L60-E. For the previous rebuilds I used ATSG manuals for the T700, as well as a video I purchased from some mob in the USA. What I really needed for this rebuild was a comprehensive equivalent for the 4L60-E, and the VY7C5 file that Tazzi posted up is exactly that. Better still, it's not a generic 4L60-E manual, it is specifically for a VY Gen3 Commodore with the exact 4HAD revision transmission. Everything I need is right there in front of me.

If I had the time I'd love to watch the videos, but patience is a virtue that Junior does not posses so it's full steam ahead. Thanks for the link anyway. Googling 'Transmission Bench 4L60E' shows me he has a Part 1 & Part 2 series on rebuilding these boxes, each Part comprising multiple lessons, so anyone who is contemplating doing a rebuild with Zero knowledge, do yourself a favour and Google 'Transmission Bench 4L60E'.

And I agree. A lot trannie places will sting you $$$$$$, and once it's all sealed back up and painted, looking nice, clean & pretty, you'd think you were getting a fully re-manufactured transmission, not a rebuilt one (there is a difference), and they know it and charge accordingly.

The journey continues...
