Just a quick update.

I crawled under the car to measure the amount of movement in the 2-4 servo cover to see if it was within specification (0.065"-0.100") and I didn't take an accurate measurement, but at a guess I'd say I could push the servo cover in about 22-24 mm  so junior is taking the transmission out as I type.

OK.

Box is out and with 250K on it, & everything working fine until what I hope is just a broken band, I see no reason to think that it'll need more than a master rebuild kit with a full set of frictions to get it back up & running. All the hard parts hopefully are fine.

I live in Melbourne's northern suburbs, so if anyone could recommend some good auto transmission workshops in Melbourne I would very much like to know.

I've only ever rebuilt my own transmissions so I have no first hand experience, or even recommendations, as to who is good/bad. I'd love to rebuild it myself but I no longer have access to the tools required to do so and don't know anyone who does.

In addition, if anyone has had a bad experience with a workshop, or knows of someone that has, could you PM me your story. Please don't mention them here as I'm not interested in publicly naming & shaming but am keen to hear about it in private.

Thanks everyone.

If your doing the first half of the trans a flat screwdriver and socket set is all that is needed, otherwise it's just a spring compressor. Check the pistons for cracks from fatigue and check all the gear sets. I have a rebuild thread on here that might help and there's GM Workshop manuals around to. I have the tools but im in QLD.

Thanks The1, but with 248K on the clock that could just be a temporary fix. Junior is already majorly pissed at not only having his dream LS1 ute of 3 months off the road, but also having to take the transmission out and pay for repairs, and he's letting anyone within earshot know about it, so for my own sake, I don't want to have do go through all this shit again in 3 months time.

Thanks Biggvl, that's very kind of you. I'll PM if I'm keen.

Just out of curiosity, assuming the rebuild only needs soft parts and all the hark parts are OK, does anyone know what price range I would expect to pay for a rebuild with a warranty?

Again, thanks for all the help everyone. Much appreciated.

If you take it to a trans specialist they'll take it apart and come up with a list of reasons you need to buy one of their off the shelf prebuilt transmissions. Excuses like the pump face is warped (they all warp and that is 1 reason for a gasket), to much wear in the drum, to much wear in the housing, will be used just to get you to shell out at least $2500 immediately rather than less money in a week. Don't fall for the tricks of the auto industry, do it yourself and teach junior how to work on his car.

Depending on how much labour and what parts are replaced, but ive never heard of a trans shop that didn't charge like a wounded, i did everything in mine apart from hard parts and cost me $600 AUD from the states for everything, that's bearings, seals, clutches, valvebody parts etc. If he's not keen on spending money another used box might be the go, box's are cheap, at a minimum put a vette servo in it.

Update.

A decision has been made. I will be rebuilding the trans myself. Can't stomach the alternatives of paying big $$ for a changeover, or getting a cheaper 2nd hand unit that I have no idea on it's history & may only last 3 months.

EDIT: I can't afford to wait for parts to be delivered if I buy on-line, so I'll be buying locally. Does anyone know of any suppliers who sell direct to the public in Melbourne?

Thanks everyone.
